Millwall fans express outrage over racist abuse following Blackburn Rovers’ red card.

Millwall F.C. have strongly condemned racist messages directed at defender Zak Sturge following his sending-off during their recent match against Blackburn Rovers F.C..

The incident occurred during the Championship clash in which Sturge was shown a red card in the second half. At that stage of the game, Millwall were still leading the contest 1-0 and looked well positioned to secure an important result. However, the match dramatically changed after the defender’s dismissal, as Blackburn Rovers managed to turn the game around.

Rovers eventually claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to a late double from defender Mathias Jorgensen, who scored twice in the closing stages to secure all three points for the visitors.

In the aftermath of the fixture, Millwall revealed that Sturge had become the target of racist abuse on social media. The club issued an official statement expressing their outrage at the messages that had been sent to the young defender following the match.

According to the statement released by the club, individuals used racist emojis and offensive remarks referencing Sturge’s skin colour in messages directed toward him on Instagram. Millwall made it clear that the content of these messages was completely unacceptable and deeply offensive.

The club described themselves as “disgusted” by the behaviour and insisted that there is absolutely no place for such abuse in football or wider society.

Millwall also explained that the abusive messages appeared to come from two separate Instagram accounts that were not connected to supporters of either club involved in the match.

Their investigation into the accounts suggested that one of them originated in Belgium while the other was traced to Mexico. The club noted that, based on the information available, neither account seemed to have any affiliation with Millwall or Blackburn Rovers.

Despite that, the club stressed that the origin of the accounts does not reduce the seriousness of the abuse directed toward their player.

Millwall confirmed that both accounts responsible for sending the racist messages had been formally reported. The complaints were submitted to Meta Platforms, the parent company that owns the social media platform Instagram.

The matter has also been referred to the English Football League as the club seeks further action and clarification on how the situation will be addressed.

At this stage, Millwall say they are waiting for further updates from the relevant authorities and organisations after submitting the reports.

In their statement, the club emphasised that their priority is ensuring that Sturge receives the support he needs following the incident. They also made clear that the defender’s family is being supported during what is understandably a distressing situation.

Millwall reiterated their firm stance against racism and discrimination in all forms. The club declared that the behaviour displayed by those responsible was disgraceful and should never be tolerated.

They pointed out that it is particularly shocking that incidents like this are still happening in modern football, especially given the extensive campaigns and initiatives that have been introduced to combat discrimination within the game.

The club stressed that racism should have no place in a sport followed by millions of people around the world. They also highlighted that the issue extends beyond football, stating that such hateful behaviour has no place in society as a whole.

Millwall further revealed that this was not the first time during the current season that one of their players had been subjected to racist abuse online.

According to the club, Sturge’s case represents the second instance this season in which a Millwall player has been targeted with racial abuse through social media platforms.

This pattern of behaviour has raised further concerns within the club about the ongoing problem of online abuse directed at professional footballers.

Millwall criticised individuals who hide behind anonymous accounts while posting hateful messages publicly on social media.

The club argued that those responsible for such abuse are often emboldened by the anonymity offered by online platforms, which allows them to avoid accountability while targeting players with offensive remarks.

They described the perpetrators as cowardly individuals who feel able to operate without consequences because they can conceal their identities behind anonymous profiles.

In their statement, Millwall called on social media companies to take stronger action in order to tackle the spread of racist and abusive content on their platforms.

The club urged these companies to introduce more effective systems for identifying offenders and preventing them from continuing to create or use accounts to spread hateful messages.

Millwall also emphasised that the responsibility for combating online abuse cannot rest solely with football clubs and governing bodies. They believe social media platforms must play a more active role in protecting users from harassment and discrimination.

The club stated that stronger moderation policies and quicker enforcement measures are necessary if meaningful progress is to be made in tackling this persistent problem.

In addition to reporting the accounts involved, Millwall confirmed that they will continue cooperating with relevant authorities and organisations to ensure the issue is properly addressed.

The club indicated that they are prepared to work closely with governing bodies, law enforcement and social media companies whenever necessary in order to combat abusive behaviour directed toward their players.

They stressed that maintaining a safe and respectful environment for players is a key priority, both on and off the pitch.
