Musician Terry Reid, famed for his powerful and emotive rock voice, has died at the age of 75 after battling cancer.
Reid, born Terrance James Reid on November 13, 1949, in Huntingdonshire, England, was nicknamed “Superlungs” for his remarkable vocal range and stamina. He was a highly respected singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career spanned several decades and who worked with some of rock’s biggest names.Reid’s career began in the early 1960s, notably as the lead singer for the British band Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, supporting the Rolling Stones on their 1966 tour.
He soon developed a solo career that saw him share stages and tours with legendary acts like Cream, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones
. Despite his talent and opportunities, Reid famously turned down offers to join what became two of rock’s most iconic bands: Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. When Jimmy Page sought him for the lead vocalist role in Led Zeppelin, Reid declined due to prior commitments on US tours with Cream and the Rolling Stones and instead recommended Robert Plant, who became the band’s legendary frontman
. Similarly, he also turned down Deep Purple’s offer, which went to Ian Gillan instead.Throughout his long career, Reid released seven studio albums and four live albums and was admired for the raw emotion in his performances. His songs have been covered by numerous artists including The Hollies, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Marianne Faithfull, and The Raconteurs. Despite not achieving the commercial stardom of some contemporaries, Reid maintained a dedicated following and was considered one of the great yet underrated rock vocalists.Known for his integrity, Reid chose to follow his own path rather than compromise, a decision that defined his legacy as an artist who valued authenticity over fame. His passing marks the loss of a unique voice in rock history—an artist who might have been a household name but is remembered with respect by those who know his work.Terry Reid died circa August 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of powerful music and a story of remarkable choices in rock and roll history.
