Newcastle United are plotting a club-record approach for a Barcelona player, according to a Spanish newspaper, revealing the possibility of the offensive midfielder departing Hansi Flick’s team for an adventure at St. James’ Park.

Barcelona and Newcastle were both busy in the summer transfer window, with both clubs hoping to have a great 2025/26 season. While Flick’s Barcelona is determined to win LaLiga and the Champions League, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle is hoping to finish in the Premier League top four and make an impression in Europe’s premier club competition this season.

Barcelona signed Joan Garcia, Roony Bardghji, and Marcus Rashford this summer, while Newcastle added Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale, and Antonito Cordero.

On Thursday, Newcastle will face Barcelona at St. James’ Park in the Champions League League Phase match.

Newcastle have set their sights on a top Barcelona attacking midfielder, according to E-Noticies.

According to the Spanish news outlet, Dani Olmo ‘will go with perfect certainty this summer’ if ‘a good offer arises’.

Newcastle are apparently willing to spend €90 million (£78 million, $106 million) for Olmo, who became the youngest foreign player to play for Dinamo Zagreb when he made his debut at 16 years and nine months old.

Such a large sum would make Olmo Newcastle’s most expensive signing, with Woltemade now holding the record.

Woltemade joined Newcastle from VfB Stuttgart in the summer transfer window for €79 million (£68.3 million, $93.1 million).

Alexander Isak previously held the record, having joined defending Premier League champions Liverpool on the final day of the summer transfer window after leaving last season’s Carabao Cup winners.

Dani Olmo’s stance on leaving Barcelona for Newcastle

According to E-Noticies, Olmo ‘wants to succeed’ in Barcelona, but only if he can become a regular in Flick’s team and play every week.

At the moment, that is not possible, as Flick primarily uses the 27-year-old as a replacement.

Olmo made only 13 starts in LaLiga and six in the Champions League last season after joining Barcelona from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024.

The Spain international player has only made one start in LaLiga for Barcelona this season, with Flick choosing to use Fermin Lopez in Olmo’s place as the former has really caught the eye this season.

The Spain international offensive midfielder is willing to quit Barcelona if he does not establish himself in the starting lineup in the coming months.

According to sources close to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, Olmo has failed to establish himself as a key character in the team, despite expectations that he would be ‘untouchable’ under Flick.

Latest Newcastle news: Transfer agreement collapsed, Barcelona star doubtful.

Trusted writer Fabrizio Romano has uncovered the transfer deal that Newcastle United chose not to pursue after signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan.

One of Barcelona’s finest players is iffy for this week’s Champions League game against Newcastle, which has Flick quite unhappy.

Newcastle are determined to keep hold of a good player that Manchester City is interested in.
