Newcastle United breaks the transfer record for Barcelona star
Newcastle United, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), are apparently preparing a club-record approach for Barcelona offensive midfielder Dani Olmo.
According to Spanish outlet E-Notícies, Olmo would be willing to leave Barcelona if the proper offer comes, and Newcastle is positioned to trigger that moment with an offer in the range of €90 million (approximately £78 million).
This, if successful, would surpass their previous high, which was paid for Nick Woltemade.
Dani Olmo joining Newcastle United?
Olmo has struggled to get starts under manager Hansi Flick. Despite high expectations after joining Barcelona from RB Leipzig in 2024, he only made 13 La Liga appearances last season and one so far this season.
Newcastle United added Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale, and Antonito Cordero during the summer transfer window, and they plan to strengthen their team in the near future by pursuing a deal for the Barcelona offensive midfielder.

However, there is acknowledgement that making such a huge investment entails dangers. Olmo’s form has been good but erratic; adjusting to new systems, expectations, and pressure at St. James’ Park will put both player and club to the test.
Newcastle already has momentum, a stronger squad, belief, and infrastructure development supported by PIF. Olmo, if motivated, has the potential to be the type of high-quality creative talent that bridges the gap between Newcastle and other great Premier League clubs.
The key will not be the cost, but whether Howe and his coaching staff can unleash Olmo’s potential, giving him confidence and a clear place on the club.
