Newcastle’s interest in a former Chelsea player was rebuffed
Newcastle United are not interested in bringing former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher back to the Premier League, despite claims.
Eddie Howe has been linked with signing the Atletico Madrid midfielder this summer.
Gallagher joined the Spanish club from Chelsea a year ago but has yet to establish himself as a starter under Diego Simeone.
The England international played only 19 games in La Liga as the Rojiblancos finished third in Spain’s top division. In those games, he scored three goals and assisted three times, and he is well-regarded by the Atletico Madrid club.
However, the 25-year-old has been linked with a return to the Premier League as he attempts to gain a spot in England’s World Cup team next summer. Javi Gómara, a Spanish journalist, claims Newcastle is one of the clubs considering a bid.
After a difficult start to the summer transfer window, Newcastle are eager to increase their attempts to enhance the squad.
Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford has been linked with a move, while Anthony Elanga is on his way from Nottingham Forest for £55 million. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has stated that Gallagher is not a target for the Magpies at the moment.
Tottenham Hotspur has also been suggested as a possible destination for the midfielder.
