Ohio State President Provides Significant Update on Head Coach Ryan Day’s Contract

In just two months, Ohio State’s head coach Ryan Day transformed his team into a national champion.

On Nov. 30, Buckeye fans demanded Day’s dismissal following a 13-10 loss to the Michigan Wolverines. The game resulted in a sideline brawl after UM players planted their flag in the centre of Ohio State’s midfield logo. Both teams were pepper-sprayed, and both schools were fined $100,000.

It was an ugly way for Ohio State to end the regular season, and the loss dropped the Buckeyes from the sixth to the eighth seed in the College Football Playoff. Over the next few weeks, Day’s Buckeyes dominated the CFP, defeating No. 9 Tennessee, No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Texas, and No. 7 Notre Dame to win their ninth national championship.

College football analysts believed Day needed to win a national title to keep his job, which he did.

And, according to the most recent update from Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors, Day will not only remain in Columbus, but he will likely be rewarded with a nice new contract.

“We’re working [on a contract extension],” Ohio State president Ted Carter stated. “We haven’t made any announcements yet, but we have intent. I know Ryan wants to stay here, so we are working out the details.”

Day’s current contract runs until 2028 and paid him $10.02 million in 2024, according to the Columbus Dispatch. He received a $1 million bonus for winning the national championship.

Day is currently the highest-paid college coach in the country, with only four other coaches earning more per year: Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian, and USC’s Lincoln Riley. Any new contract he signs could make him even more lucrative.
