Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin secures another gold, winning the World Cup slalom race.
Mikaela Shiffrin has once again climbed to the top of the podium, continuing her extraordinary run of success in alpine skiing. The Olympic slalom champion delivered another standout performance, winning the first World Cup race in the discipline since the Milano Cortina Games on Sunday, March 15. Despite a slight mistake near the bottom section of the course, Shiffrin maintained her composure and finished with a commanding advantage, crossing the line 0.94 seconds ahead of Germany’s Emma Aicher. The victory marked the 109th World Cup win of Shiffrin’s already historic career, further solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest skiers of all time.

Although Shiffrin had already secured the season’s slalom title prior to this race, the win carried additional importance in the broader context of the overall standings. By finishing ahead of Aicher, she widened the gap between them in the race for the overall World Cup crown. Shiffrin now sits at 1,286 points, giving her a 140-point cushion over Aicher as the competition heads into the decisive final stage of the season. The World Cup finals are set to begin next week in Lillehammer, Norway, where the battle for overall supremacy will reach its conclusion.
At the finish line, there was a moment of mutual respect between the top two competitors. Shiffrin and Aicher acknowledged each other’s performances with a salute, highlighting the sportsmanship and camaraderie that often accompanies elite-level competition. Both athletes have pushed each other throughout the season, elevating the level of performance in women’s alpine skiing.
Reflecting on the race and the challenge ahead, Shiffrin emphasized the importance of maintaining her competitive mindset. She acknowledged the strength of her rival, noting that Aicher has been performing at an exceptional level across multiple events. Shiffrin expressed her determination to keep fighting through the remaining races, underlining her focus and resilience as the season approaches its climax. Her comments revealed not only her respect for her competitors but also her unwavering commitment to excellence.
Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener secured third place in the race, finishing one second behind Shiffrin. The podium result added another strong performance to Holdener’s season. Meanwhile, American teammates also delivered notable efforts, with Paula Moltzan finishing in fifth position and A.J. Hurt placing 14th. Their results contributed to a solid showing for the United States team in the event.
Shiffrin’s dominance in slalom this season has been nothing short of remarkable. Out of nine World Cup slalom races, she has claimed victory in eight and finished second in the remaining one. Her performances have often been characterized by significant winning margins, underscoring her technical precision, consistency, and mental strength. At the Olympics, where she captured the third gold medal of her career, Shiffrin delivered an especially commanding display, winning by an astonishing 1.5 seconds. That margin of victory was the largest seen in Olympic slalom competition since 1998, further highlighting the extent of her superiority in the discipline.
When asked to explain the key to her success this season, Shiffrin admitted that it is not always easy to pinpoint a single factor. She suggested that simplicity may have played a role, particularly toward the latter part of the season. By focusing on fundamental aspects of her skiing and maintaining a clear mindset, she has been able to perform at an exceptionally high level. However, she also acknowledged that there may not be a straightforward explanation for her dominance, emphasizing instead the importance of maintaining positive energy and a strong team spirit.
Looking ahead, Shiffrin and her team are determined to finish the season on a high note. With the World Cup finals approaching, the focus will be on sustaining momentum and delivering strong performances in the remaining races. Shiffrin’s combination of experience, skill, and competitive drive positions her well as she aims to secure the overall title and add yet another achievement to her illustrious career.
As the season nears its conclusion, Shiffrin’s achievements continue to captivate fans and inspire fellow athletes. Her ability to consistently perform under pressure, adapt to different conditions, and maintain a winning mentality sets her apart in the world of alpine skiing. With each victory, she not only adds to her record-breaking tally but also reinforces her status as a dominant force in the sport.
