Oxford United Sack Gary Rowett as Relegation Worries Deepen
Oxford United have parted company with head coach Gary Rowett as the club continues to battle near the foot of the Championship table, with relegation fears intensifying as the season progresses.
The decision was taken in the wake of a narrow 1–0 defeat away to Charlton Athletic on Saturday, a result that ultimately proved decisive for Rowett. The loss came exactly one year after he had taken charge of the U’s, marking an unfortunate anniversary that sealed his departure. Oxford’s recent form has been a growing concern, with the side failing to register a win in their last four league outings and remaining stuck in the Championship’s bottom three.
Frustration among supporters has been increasingly evident, and that discontent was once again on display at full-time at The Valley. Travelling fans made their feelings clear, voicing displeasure at both the result and the standard of football being produced, as Oxford slipped further into relegation trouble.
Rowett, 51, initially joined Oxford during a difficult period last season, stepping into the role midway through the campaign. Despite the challenges, he successfully guided the club to safety in what was their first season back in the Championship for 25 years. His efforts in stabilising the team and securing their second-tier status were widely recognised at the time, earning him praise for his leadership and experience.
However, this season has proved far more problematic. A lack of consistency, coupled with a series of disappointing results, has left Oxford struggling to gain momentum. With the club now deeply embroiled in a relegation scrap and results failing to improve, the board ultimately decided that a change in leadership was necessary.
Oxford United confirmed Rowett’s departure in an official club statement, which also announced that assistant head coach Mark Sale had left the club with immediate effect. The statement emphasised that the search for a new permanent head coach is already underway, with further updates to be provided in due course.
In the meantime, responsibility for the first team will fall to Craig Short, who will oversee preparations alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price. The interim coaching group will be tasked with steadying the ship during a crucial period of the season, as Oxford look to claw their way out of danger and restore belief within the squad.
Chairman Grant Ferguson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and paid tribute to Rowett’s contribution to the club. He highlighted the challenging circumstances under which Rowett arrived and praised the work that led to Oxford retaining their Championship status last season.
Ferguson said that while Rowett deserved significant credit for his efforts, the club felt compelled to act following a disappointing run of results. He stressed that the decision was made with the long-term interests of Oxford United in mind, adding that the board wished both Rowett and Sale well for the future and thanked them for their service.
The timing of the dismissal means Oxford now face a demanding festive period without a permanent head coach in place. Attention quickly turns to Boxing Day, when the U’s are scheduled to host Southampton. The match represents a significant test for the interim staff and players alike, as well as an opportunity to inject fresh energy into the campaign.
With the Championship relegation battle typically proving tight and unforgiving, Oxford know there is little margin for error. The coming weeks will be critical as the club seeks to arrest their slide, improve performances, and begin picking up the points needed to secure survival.
As the search for a new head coach gathers pace, Oxford supporters will hope that the next appointment can provide clarity, stability, and a renewed sense of direction. For now, the focus remains on immediate results, starting with the Boxing Day fixture, as the U’s fight to preserve their place in the Championship.
