Preston North End transfer talk fades as Middlesbrough beat Bristol City to £300k deal
Preston North End’s reported interest in Finley Munroe appears to be coming to an abrupt end, with Middlesbrough emerging as the club set to secure the young defender’s signature. The Lilywhites had been loosely linked with a move for the Aston Villa full-back in recent weeks, but developments elsewhere look to have ruled out any realistic chance of a deal.
Munroe, still only 20, has been attracting growing attention after an impressive loan spell with Swindon Town earlier this season. The left-back featured regularly for the League Two promotion hopefuls, making 27 appearances and chipping in with two goals, performances that did not go unnoticed across the Football League. His displays prompted speculation that a Championship move could be on the cards once Aston Villa reassessed his short-term future.
Preston were among the clubs credited with loan interest in the teenager last week, as North End continue to monitor young talent capable of strengthening their squad either immediately or in the long term. However, any hope of a temporary deal quickly faded when Villa recalled Munroe earlier this week, a move that signalled a potential permanent transfer rather than another loan.
At the same time, other clubs were circling. Leyton Orient were also reported to be tracking Munroe’s situation, while Bristol City were believed to have stepped up their interest by submitting a bid in the region of £350,000. That valuation suggested Villa were open to cashing in on the defender, particularly with sell-on clauses likely to form part of any agreement.
Despite Bristol City’s apparent early move, the latest reports indicate that Middlesbrough have beaten their Championship rivals to the punch. According to BBC Sport, Boro have agreed a deal worth around £300,000 for Munroe, with the package including a sizeable sell-on percentage that could benefit Villa in the future should the player’s value rise. The lower upfront fee, offset by long-term clauses, appears to have been enough to persuade Villa to accept Boro’s proposal.
For Preston North End, this effectively closes the door on a player who briefly looked like a potential addition. While Munroe may have fit the profile of a young, attack-minded full-back with room to develop, North End now look set to miss out as Middlesbrough move to finalise the transfer. From Boro’s perspective, the deal represents a relatively low-risk investment in a promising defender with proven senior experience at League Two level and the potential to grow into Championship football.
Elsewhere, another name previously linked with Preston could also be on the move again, this time from Chelsea. David Datro Fofana was on North End’s radar late in the summer transfer window, with suggestions that a deal could materialise before the deadline. In the end, however, no agreement was reached and the interest failed to progress beyond speculation.
Fofana’s career has taken a winding path over the past few months. A proposed move to Charlton Athletic collapsed at the eleventh hour, leaving the Ivorian forward in limbo before he eventually secured a switch to Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük in mid-September. Since arriving in the Süper Lig, the 21-year-old has made a positive impression, scoring five goals and reminding observers of the potential that prompted Chelsea to sign him in the first place.
Despite that encouraging spell in Turkey, Fofana’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge still appears uncertain. According to respected transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are actively working on a permanent exit for the striker during the current transfer window. Several clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation, including Celtic, Royal Antwerp and Derby County, all of whom are believed to be assessing the feasibility of a deal.
While Preston are not currently mentioned among the interested parties, Fofana’s situation serves as a reminder of how quickly transfer landscapes can change. A player once loosely associated with a move to Deepdale could now be heading elsewhere, just as Munroe’s potential link with North End has been overtaken by Middlesbrough’s decisive action.
As the January window progresses, Preston will continue to be linked with various targets, but the Munroe story underlines the competitive nature of the market. Championship clubs are often forced to move quickly and decisively, particularly when young, highly rated players become available. In this case, Middlesbrough appear to have acted fastest, leaving Preston to look elsewhere as they shape their squad for the remainder of the season.
