These remarks won’t exactly inspire confidence as Rangers supporters tensely wait for the next several weeks before the season starts.

More than compliments the management seems to be downplaying expectations ahead of the new season and attempting to explain a lack of transfer activity. Rangers are headed in the right path.

Perhaps we are reading between the lines, perhaps Clement is just saying the truth, but the Belgian has not rallied the troops for Rangers supporters hoping for a title challenge next season.

We have a sinking sensation for a protracted campaign; if Clement is expecting a bye or any patience from supporters, he can almost certainly forget it.

Although Rangers supporters will recognise development regardless of scale, blaming short term setback with soundbites about long-term success will not be sufficient.

These folks in the background of the club have to get it right this summer – or at least push us in the right direction – and anything less will see their jobs on the line.

It really feels as though Clement arrived early here with some justification.

Although we hope we are mistaken, far from inspire confidence the manager’s most recent soundbites have done exactly the reverse.

Because of how busy Clement and Nils Koppen are at Ibrox this summer, they can’t pay that much, even though John Bennett has said there is money to spend [Daily Record, 14 June]. This means he can’t leave for a cheap price with only a few months left on his contract, but it doesn’t mean a transfer won’t happen.

Injuries don’t affect anyone more than the player who gets hurt, but Rangers have had more of a problem with them lately than most teams.

Dowell was a signing by Michael Beale, and when a new manager takes over, players that were brought in by the previous manager may not be available. Since he was a free agent, it might not take a huge offer to get him.

To get Connor Barron, the Rangers want to win the race.

There is a “strong offer” for Barron to move to Glasgow, and he is likely to decide next week. In the English Championship, Swansea City, Cardiff, Stoke, and Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle are all fans of him.

Barry Ferguson, who has led Rangers to five Scottish Premiership titles, would love to see one of the best young players in the country follow in his royal blue footsteps.

After all, Ferguson has criticised his old team for not making better use of local talent, since Josh Doig, Hickey, and his nephew Lewis all left Scotland to play for other teams.

One more thing that needs to be thought about is Philippe Clement’s suggestions. If he can’t take the club to the next level, he will be held accountable.
