Saddest Day: The University of Alabama Reports the Death of an NFL Rookie and Former Alabama Cornerback
The University of Alabama community is mourning the tragic loss of former Crimson Tide cornerback and Minnesota Vikings rookie, Khyree Jackson, who died in a car accident on July 6, 2024, in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Jackson, 24, was among three individuals who lost their lives in the early morning collision. The accident also claimed the lives of his former high school teammates, Isaiah Hazel, 23, and Anthony Lytton Jr., 24.
The Accident
According to Maryland State Police, the fatal crash occurred just after 3 a.m. on July 6, 2024. Jackson, Hazel, and Lytton were traveling in a Dodge Charger when their vehicle was struck by an Infiniti Q50 that was reportedly speeding and changing lanes. The impact caused the Charger to veer off the road and collide with multiple tree stumps. Jackson and Hazel were pronounced dead at the scene, while Lytton was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Infiniti, identified as Cori Clingman, was arrested and indicted on 13 counts, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. Investigations revealed that Clingman’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time of the crash. If convicted, she faces up to 30 years in prison.
Khyree Jackson’s Journey
Born on August 11, 1999, in Washington, D.C., Khyree Jackson’s path to professional football was marked by resilience and determination. He began his high school career at Springbrook High School in White Oak, Maryland, before transferring to Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro. As a senior in 2018, Jackson played both wide receiver and defensive back, contributing to his team’s undefeated season and state championship victory.
Despite his high school success, Jackson faced challenges in securing college opportunities due to academic hurdles. He initially enrolled at Arizona Western College but left before playing a game. After a brief hiatus, during which he worked various jobs, Jackson resumed his football career at Fort Scott Community College in 2019. Originally recruited as a wide receiver, he transitioned to cornerback during the season, showcasing his adaptability and talent.
Community and Team Reactions
The news of Jackson’s untimely death sent shockwaves through the football community. The Minnesota Vikings expressed their devastation, with General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah stating, “I am heartbroken by the loss of Khyree. His story was one of resilience. He was taking steps to become the best version of himself not just for him, but for those who cared about and looked up to him.”
Remembering a Legacy
Khyree Jackson’s journey from high school standout to NFL rookie is a testament to his perseverance and passion for the game. His ability to overcome obstacles and achieve his dreams serves as an inspiration to many. As the football community reflects on his life and career, Jackson is remembered not only for his athletic talents but also for his character and the positive impact he had on those around him.
The tragic loss of Khyree Jackson, along with his friends Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., underscores the profound impact of reckless and impaired driving. As the legal proceedings continue, their families, friends, and the broader community seek justice and healing. Their memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew them and in the legacy they left on and off the field.
In the wake of this tragedy, the University of Alabama, the Minnesota Vikings, and the broader football community are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. Khyree Jackson’s story, though cut short, remains a powerful narrative of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
