Shiffrin Recharges at Home, Supports Brother, and Gears Up for World Cup Return

Double Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin recently enjoyed a two-week stay in her hometown of Vail, Colorado, where she combined valuable training with quality family time. Known for performing in front of her loved ones on the slopes, this time Shiffrin found herself in the role of supporter — literally standing behind the fence — as she cheered on her older brother, Taylor, 32, during a cross-country mountain biking event at the GoPro Mountain Games on Saturday, 7 June 2025. Taylor completed the demanding 6.8-mile (11 km) race in just under 2 hours and 20 minutes, with Mikaela waiting proudly at the finish line.

During her break, the 30-year-old skier also took part in a four-day training camp at Copper Mountain, sharpening her skills in giant slalom — a discipline she’s been working hard to rebuild confidence in following a major abdominal injury sustained last November at Killington. That injury sidelined her for two months and deeply impacted her performance, eventually leading her to skip the GS event at the World Championships. Shiffrin later disclosed she was also dealing with PTSD, which further affected her season.

Reflecting on her recent progress, she told Vail Daily, “It’s been good. I think with time and just practice and, like I said, repetition, everything starts to sort of settle in and feel like, ‘OK, I can do this, and I can get faster.’ And I start to feel the improvements happening again.”

Shiffrin is now preparing to kick off her 16th World Cup season on Saturday, 25 October, at the traditional GS opener in Sölden, Austria.
