Mikaela Shiffrin of Edwards demonstrated her midseason form Saturday, winning her record-extending 102nd World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland.

Shiffin won by two runs in 1.6 seconds.

“I trusted the training with my team,” Shiffrin told the US Ski squad following the event. “We accomplished a lot of work this summer. The final step concerned attitude. It’s starting to feel like home; I really enjoy being here, and I’m excited to start the slalom season.”

Shiffrin wins her eleventh Levi reindeer, which is awarded to the yearly slalom winner.

“It’s really important to start with a good mentality so it was great to start the slalom season with two good runs,” she said.

American Paula Moltzan finished fourth, narrowly off the podium, after a strong second run comeback.

“After a difficult first run, I realized I needed to shift into a higher gear to make up time. I’m quite pleased with my skiing second run; I felt like I was able to do some of my finest turns,” Moltzan remarked. “I could not be happier to have the wooden spoon. Thank you to the Levi course staff for maintaining such excellent course conditions. Mikaela gave an excellent clinic on how to ski Levi, and she continues to wow everyone with her skiing.”

The men’s ski team will compete in their first slalom race on Sunday. Many of the same racers will compete at Copper Mountain during Thanksgiving. The men’s squad will compete on Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey course from Dec. 4-7.
