Southampton exit sealed with medical today
Southampton are preparing to offload forward Damion Downs during the January transfer window after reaching an agreement with German club Hamburg over a temporary move, with the deal now progressing rapidly toward completion.
According to transfer insider Florian Plettenberg, the Championship side have agreed terms with Hamburg for the 21-year-old attacker to join the Bundesliga outfit on loan for the remainder of the season. The deal is expected to include an option for Hamburg to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign, and Downs is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Tuesday.
The move signals a clear intention from Southampton to reshape their squad midway through a challenging season, with Downs among those deemed surplus to immediate requirements.
Downs Facing Exit After Difficult Start in England
Damion Downs arrived at St Mary’s in July following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, having been identified as a promising attacking addition capable of contributing goals during the club’s push for promotion. The Saints secured his signature on a long-term contract running until the summer of 2029, reflecting their belief in his long-term potential.

However, the move has not delivered the desired impact. Downs has struggled to settle into English football and has been unable to make a meaningful contribution in front of goal. Across 14 appearances in all competitions this season—13 of them in the Championship—the striker has yet to score or register an assist.
With confidence low and opportunities limited, Southampton have now decided that a temporary departure could benefit both the player and the club.
Hamburg Win the Race for the Forward
While there had reportedly been interest from Werder Bremen, Hamburg have emerged as the frontrunners and ultimately secured an agreement with Southampton. The Bundesliga club are eager to reinforce their attacking options and believe Downs can rediscover the form that once made him one of the more promising young forwards in Germany.
Hamburg earned promotion from Bundesliga 2 last season and are currently focused on stabilising themselves in the top tier. Bringing in a young, motivated attacker on loan—with a potential permanent deal attached—fits neatly into their recruitment strategy.
The loan spell offers Downs a return to familiar surroundings, where he previously showed strong attacking instincts and consistency.

A Stark Contrast to His German Form
Before moving to England, Downs developed through the academy system at FC Ingolstadt before making his name at FC Köln. During his time in Cologne, he found the net 13 times in 42 senior appearances, displaying a sharp eye for goal and a physical presence that attracted attention beyond Germany.
Those performances also earned him international recognition, with Downs collecting six caps for the United States national team. At that stage, his trajectory appeared firmly upward.
Since arriving in England, however, momentum has stalled. The physical demands and tempo of the Championship, combined with Southampton’s own struggles, have made it difficult for Downs to find rhythm or confidence.
Southampton’s Ongoing Struggles
The Saints’ willingness to sanction Downs’ departure is reflective of wider issues at the club. Relegated from the Premier League last season alongside Ipswich Town and Leicester City, Southampton entered the current campaign with expectations of mounting a promotion challenge.
Those ambitions have yet to materialise. After 26 league matches, Southampton sit 15th in the Championship table, eight points adrift of the play-off places. Performances have been inconsistent, and recent results have raised further concerns.
The club are currently on a six-game winless run and suffered a heavy 4–0 defeat away to Middlesbrough in their most recent outing—a result that intensified scrutiny on the squad and coaching staff.
Changes in the Dugout
Following relegation, Southampton appointed Will Still as head coach, hoping his progressive approach would guide the club back toward the top flight. However, his tenure failed to deliver the required results, and the club moved on swiftly.
Tonda Eckert has since taken charge, but early signs suggest the challenges remain. Pressure is already beginning to mount on the new boss, with performances failing to improve and defensive vulnerabilities continuing to be exposed.
In that context, trimming the squad and allowing underperforming players to reset elsewhere appears a pragmatic decision.
What the Move Means for Downs
For Downs, the loan move to Hamburg represents a vital opportunity to revive his career. Returning to Germany should ease the adaptation challenges he faced in England, while regular minutes could help him rediscover confidence and form.
With an option to buy included in the agreement, Hamburg will closely assess his performances over the coming months. A strong showing could result in a permanent switch, offering Downs stability and a fresh start.
Conversely, if the loan fails to spark improvement, Southampton will be forced to reassess his future once again next summer.
Likely the End of the Road at St Mary’s
From Southampton’s perspective, this move feels like a tacit admission that the original transfer has not worked. While Downs remains under long-term contract, the club appear ready to move on if Hamburg activate their purchase option.
Supporters may already have seen the last of the American striker in a Southampton shirt. His departure would free up squad space and wages, allowing Eckert to pursue reinforcements better suited to the club’s immediate needs.
Looking Ahead
Southampton now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures, beginning with an FA Cup tie away to Doncaster Rovers this weekend. With league form faltering and confidence fragile, a positive result is badly needed to halt the slide and restore belief.
As for Damion Downs, the coming months in Germany could prove decisive. Whether his time at Southampton ultimately becomes a footnote or a temporary setback depends on how he responds to this chance at redemption in the Bundesliga.
