The Notre Dame men’s basketball team lost against the Louisville Cardinals 75-60 on Sunday, dropping them to 11-15 on the season.

Winning the ACC Conference Tournament is the Fighting Irish’s sole chance for a spectacular March.

Everyone involved, including head coach Micah Shrewsberry, is beginning to feel the effects of the poor season. Shrewsberry expressed his thoughts regarding the state of Notre Dame basketball after the game.

“I saw more Louisville supporters in this room than Notre Dame supporters. And that’s humiliating. Indeed, I put us in this situation. But while we’re winning, don’t return. “Write down this date, everyone who gave up on me,” Shrewsberry said.

Shrewsberry has been the Fighting Irish’s head coach for two seasons. His first season ended with a 13–20 record.

Emotions are running high for a coach who is in dire need of change since the team might end up ending about the same this season.

For the time being, Shrewsberry and the Fighting Irish are still going through growing pains. Fans, however, need to appreciate his ferocious determination. even if it could be pointed in the incorrect direction at the moment.

Notes about the Game

Louisville

Louisville has won five away games with a margin of victory of 20 points or more for the first time in the program’s 111-year history: at Virginia (20), Syracuse (24), SMU (25), Boston College (26), and NC State (25).

In its ACC victories, Louisville had an average victory margin of 16.5 points.

The team achieved goals of 60% FG, 50% 3FG, and 90% from the free throw line in the same game for the first time in Louisville’s history during their game against NC State on February 12.

Chucky Hepburn, the starting point guard, was selected for the Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year Midseason Team.

Based on the NET and amount of victories, Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals are among the best teams since the conclusion of 2023–24. Page 15 lists Pat Kelsey as a candidate for National Coach of the Year.

In terms of 3-point attempts per game (30.2) as of February 13, Louisville is sixth in the nation.

As of February 13, Chucky Hepburn is 17th overall (149 assists) and 15th in the nation in assists per game (6.2). In terms of both total thefts (56), and steals per game (2.33), he ranks 15th. Reyne Smith leads the nation in both 3-pointers made (96) and 3-pointers made per game (3.84). With 240 3-point attempts, he ranks third overall.

According to Bart Torvik, James Scott, a sophomore forward, has 55 dunks this season, ranking second in the nation as of February 13. He currently ranks fifth on Louisville’s history of dunks in a single season and leads the ACC in that statistic.

The 10-game victory run for Louisville was the longest since the Cardinals’ 10-game winning streak from January 7 to February 8, 2020.

Louisville has lost four of its six games against teams who are currently in the AP Top 25: No. 19 Ole Miss (19-6), No. 5 Tennessee (20-5), No. 15 Kentucky (17-7), and No. 3 Duke (21-3). Together with Oklahoma (16-8) the teams are 93-29 as of February 13.

Chucky Hepburn broke the UofL single-game assist record on January 21 at SMU with 16. With ten, Reyne Smith broke the program’s record for the most games made. The only DI team this century to have a player with 10+ 3-pointers and 15+ assists in the same game was Louisville. The Warriors, with Klay Thompson (10 3 PM) and Steph Curry (15 AST), were the last NBA team to achieve so on November 20, 2022.

Terrence Edwards Jr., a fifth-year senior guard/forward, became the third Cardinal to win the weekly award this season when he was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday.

In Louisville’s eleven years in the ACC, this is the first time three separate players have won ACC Player of the Week. Terrence Edwards Jr. was the most recent recipient on February 10; Chucky Hepburn had the title on December 2; and Reyne Smith received it on December 23. Louisville has won the award more than twice in a single season for the first time since the 2014–15 campaign, when Terry Rozier and Montrezl Harrell combined for five wins.

This season, the Cardinals are among the nation’s most seasoned squads. There are just two underclassmen on the 17-man roster, and the average number of years played in collegiate basketball is 3.0. With 12 players named seniors this season, the Cards are tied with Western Kentucky for the most of any men’s DI college basketball team.

James Scott, a sophomore, and Khani Rooths, a freshman, are Louisville’s only underclassmen. Only 11 DI schools have two or fewer underclassmen on their roster, and Louisville is the only Power Four school on that list.

The Dame of Notre

Throughout the ACC season, Notre Dame men’s basketball established a pattern of establishing double-digit leads in the first half before faltering and losing by a slim margin. The similar pattern was followed by Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami, Syracuse, and NC State. The Irish are now present in all ACC games. As an example, they have only lost by an average of 5.5. In games decided by six or fewer points, the Irish are 3-6 overall this season.

Burton returned on January 4 after 39 days out recovering from a knee injury, and he has been performing at his peak ever since. In January, the sophomore scored 20 points or more in five straight games, something no Irish player had done since Ben Hansbrough in February 2011.

Burton’s career point total is rapidly approaching 1,000. He has 939 going into Sunday’s game against Louisville. He is now on track to join the all-time greats as the seventh-fastest Irish player to collect 1,000 career points.

For Most Improved, Tae Davis ought to be a contender. From 9.2 ppg the previous year, he is now averaging a career-high 15.8 ppg. Among ACC players, his scoring average comes in at number twelve. In addition, the Indianapolis native is shooting a career-high 49.1 percent, enough for sixth place in the league overall.

Other Irish people had to step up and change while Burton was recuperating. Tae Davis’ rise has previously been discussed, but Braeden Shrewsberry’s development has also been seen. The guard’s average of 13.8 points per game is higher than his 10.2 from the previous season. He is shooting 41.5 percent, up from 39.8 percent the previous year.

Burton and Shrewsberry averaged 21.3 points per game and 13.8, respectively, so we wanted to see how they compared to other guard combinations in the ACC. First, the answer. Their aggregate score of 35.1 surpasses both Duke’s Flagg/Knueppel and Pitt’s Lowe/Leggett.

For a few games, the Irish have been without their veteran leader as Matt Allocco continues to treat his injured right wrist with trainer Nixon Dorvillien.

The biggest comeback victory during Coach Shrews’ tenure was the 14-point victory against Boston College.

For the first time since 2019, the Irish defeated Boston College to clinch a season sweep.

Burton scored 32 points at BC, which was the fourth-highest point total by an Irish player in an ACC game and a career best.

Burton’s defensive pressure has been increasing. With 2.0 steals per game, he is currently ranked second in the ACC.

On February 8, Notre Dame defeated Virginia Tech 16–16 from the free-throw line. In program history, it was the third-best game in terms of free-throw shooting %.

Throughout the season, Allocco has a 61.0 true shooting percentage.

Kebba scored the game-winning putback and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in the victory over BC.

In relation to Kebba, the junior is ranking seventh in the ACC with an average of 2.9 offensive rebounds per game.
