The Saints’ offseason assets were ranked of the NFL’s worst war chests.
According to Pro Football Focus, the New Orleans Saints are in the worst position as we approach the talent acquisition portion of the offseason. The Saints are a bad team with few resources to change this reality. That means they are short on draft picks and salary cap space.
PFF ranked New Orleans as having the third-worst assets this offseason. The majority of teams at the bottom of the asset rankings advance to the playoffs. The Seahawks, who finished last, were one tiebreaker away from winning the NFC West. The Saints and Atlanta Falcons are ranked 30th and 31st respectively.
These rankings were determined using three criteria: effective cap space, restructure potential, and draft capital. The Saints’ problem is that they are the only team without any effective cap space after pushing so much money from previous contracts into this fiscal year.
As always, New Orleans has a lot of potential for restructuring, but the majority of it will be to get under the salary cap. This is not to say they will not sign anyone in free agency. Last year, New Orleans signed Chase Young after starting in a similar situation. However, the restructuring will limit the Saints’ options this offseason.
New Orleans will build its roster through the 2025 draft. PFF’s rankings are a great example of this. It should come as no surprise that New Orleans has one of the lowest sets of assets. This was expected to be a long-term renovation project.
