Austin, Texas – February 15, 2025 – Tre Johnson delivered a stellar performance, scoring a game-high 32 points to lead the Texas Longhorns to a statement 85-78 victory over No. 15 Kentucky at the Moody Center on Saturday night.

Johnson, a highly touted freshman, showcased his scoring ability throughout the contest, knocking down key shots and controlling the tempo for Texas (18-6, 7-4 Big 12). His efforts helped the Longhorns secure a much-needed victory against a ranked opponent as they continue to build their NCAA Tournament résumé.

Johnson Shines as Texas Controls Second Half

Kentucky (19-5, 8-3 SEC) entered the matchup looking to extend its winning streak but struggled to contain Johnson, who was nearly unstoppable from the field. The freshman guard shot an efficient 12-of-19, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while also contributing five assists and four rebounds.

Despite Kentucky’s early efforts to take control, Texas managed to stay within striking distance in the first half. The Wildcats held a slim 40-38 lead at halftime behind strong play from center Amari Williams, who battled in the paint and finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

However, Texas turned up the intensity after the break. Johnson continued his hot shooting, while senior forward Kadin Shedrick played a crucial role in the paint, finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Longhorns’ defense tightened, forcing key turnovers that allowed them to take control late in the game.

Texas Makes Key Stops Down the Stretch

As the game entered the final five minutes, Texas maintained a narrow lead, fending off Kentucky’s comeback attempts. The Wildcats relied on guard D.J. Wagner’s scoring prowess, as he finished with 22 points, but Texas’ defensive effort proved to be the difference.

Longhorns coach Rodney Terry praised his team’s resilience and execution in the second half.

“Tre was phenomenal tonight, but it was a team effort down the stretch,” Terry said. “We played smart, we made the right plays, and we got stops when we needed them most.”

With the win, Texas strengthens its case for a higher seed in March Madness, while Kentucky will look to regroup as they approach a tough stretch in SEC play.

Texas will next face Baylor on the road, while Kentucky returns home for a showdown with Tennessee.
