Valladolid sack coach after protests against Ronaldo

Real Valladolid fired coach Paulo Pezzolano on Sunday following a 5-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid, in which some supporters protested against majority owner Ronaldo Nazario.

Valladolid sit at the bottom of the standings, four points from safety, with only two victories in their first 15 league games.

“The paths of Real Valladolid and Paulo Pezzolano have separated,” the club said in a statement.

“The Uruguayan coach will not continue at Pucela after 70 matches across three seasons.”

Pezzolano, who was hired in April 2023 but was unable to prevent their relegation from LaLiga, led Valladolid return to the top level last season.

Some fans protested against Ronaldo, the former Brazil great, during Atletico’s defeat at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium.

When the club went behind 3-0 to Atletico in the first half, a few fans held up a banner reading “Ronaldo go home,” while others walked out.
