This is the first game of the new season for two Western Conference teams that played in the Play-In. It will be on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when the Golden State Warriors host the New Orleans Pelicans at Chase Center in San Francisco.

The game is set to begin at 10 p.m. EST and will be shown on TNT. Fans who want to watch this NBA game can do so for free with either SlingTV or DirectTV Stream, which both offer free trials. Plans for Max start at just $9.99 a month and include movies, original shows, and more.

Both the Pelicans and the Warriors are 2-1, and their backcourts are hurt. Stephen Curry will miss a few games for the Warriors because of an ankle injury. Dejounte Murray won’t be ready to play for the Pelicans until late November after having surgery on his hand.

Last week, Erik Spoelstra made history in a quiet way. He didn’t see any reason to be happy.

Spoelstra is in his 17th season as coach of the Miami Heat. This is the third-longest straight-year run by a coach with the same team in NBA history. For 29 years, Gregg Popovich coached the Spurs, and for 23 years, Jerry Sloan led Utah.

Most NBA coaches today might not even think that such a run is doable.

Twenty-five of the league’s thirty coaches are starting their third or fourth year on the job. The coach has already been changed eight times this year, and two more months are left for an owner or general manager to add to that number.

“That’s the sobering truth of this job,” Spoelstra said. “That statistic makes me sad because there are a lot of talented coaches who could do what I can do here if their teams had the same structure, continuity, and belief.”

People who work as coaches know that the phrase “job security” doesn’t mean much, especially these days.

The WNBA had 12 teams this season, and seven of them don’t have coaches yet. Last year was one of the most successful in terms of numbers and attention. In seven years, the Dallas Wings are about to hire their fourth coach. Tanisha Wright was let go by the Atlanta Dream even though they made the playoffs. Christie Sides was fired by the Indiana Fever over the weekend after the team went from a 1-8 start to making the playoffs. Caitlin Clark had a record-setting rookie year. The Connecticut Sun and coach Stephanie White also broke up on Monday, after making it to the WNBA quarterfinals twice in a row.

The WNBA isn’t trying to copy the NBA’s rotating staff of coaches, but here we are.

After the Fever let her go, Sides wrote on social media, “Leave it better than you found it.”

The NBA may still be the best place to be if you don’t like your boss, though. During the off-season, some moves were made that seemed crazy at first glance.

The Los Angeles Lakers hired JJ Redick from ESPN. Before this job, Redick had only coached fourth students earlier this year. Phoenix got rid of NBA winner Frank Vogel and replaced him with Mike Budenholzer, who won the title against the Suns in 2021. In more than 30 years, JB Bickerstaff was the first coach to take a Cleveland Cavaliers team that didn’t have LeBron James to the second round. He was also fired.

Bickerstaff joined Detroit in the end. The Pistons fired Monty Williams after just one season, even though he still had five years and about $65 million left on his deal. Williams will now coach his kids at a San Antonio high school.

The boss told them, “Just keep doing what you’re supposed to do.”

He could have said “as long as you have it,” because you never know what will happen in the NBA.

After 18 games into the 1996–97 season, Popovich fired Bob Hill as Spurs coach and made himself coach. A year later, Tim Duncan came in and changed the team’s luck, but Popovich’s 17-47 record in that first season probably wouldn’t have given him a chance to keep the job in today’s NBA.

It’s clear that the move paid off. Popovich has won more games than any other coach in NBA history. And if you count moves involving temporary coaches, the next coaching change in the league will be the 300th since Popovich took over as Spurs coach.

In the league since Popovich began, there have been 183 different coaches, not counting him. During that time, 78 of them have coached for more than one team. For example, Alvin Gentry, Larry Brown, Mike D’Antoni, and Doc Rivers have all coached in five different places. Nine other coaches have worked for four different teams during that time.

Willie Green, the coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, said, “You’re always trying to be the best that you can be.” Green is starting his fourth year as a coach, which is longer than half of the other coaches in the game. “But you take these jobs even though you know they won’t last long.”

Popovich will not be fired. The first year of Spoelstra’s eight-year contract has already passed. Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors will decide when he wants to leave the team. After bringing Boston to an NBA title, Joe Mazzulla has surely earned a lot of safety. Building Oklahoma City has been a great job by Mark Daigneault. Others are safe in their job even if things go badly, but I don’t think there are many of them.

“There have been 14 job openings in just the last two years,” said Spoelstra. He is part of a group in Miami that includes team president Pat Riley and is about to work 30 years for the Heat. “I think that’s a really sad state for coaching in that way.” It doesn’t give coaching staffs enough time to build a mindset and the right habits, or to go through the hard times they need to in order to get to the next level. I’m glad that this place has order and stability.
