Willie Haughey shares Celtic board’s response to his £10m share buy for fans as legend-led plan is announced.
Lord Willie Haughey has stated that there has been no sense of opposition or resistance from Celtic’s leadership following his announcement of the ‘Season Ticket Alliance’ initiative. The businessman, who previously served as a non-executive director at the club, has now shared further details about the project, confirming that it is close to being officially launched and will be spearheaded by club legend Paul McStay.

Earlier this year, in February, Haughey revealed an ambitious proposal aimed at strengthening the relationship between supporters and the club’s hierarchy. His idea involves committing £2 million into a dedicated fund for every 10,000 supporters who sign up to the scheme. The initiative comes at a time when tensions have been growing between sections of the fanbase and the Celtic board, with dissatisfaction expressed through protests and other actions.
Throughout the season, Celtic has experienced unrest among supporters, with demonstrations directed at those in charge of the club. One of the most notable flashpoints involved the Green Brigade ultras group, who were locked out for a period lasting five months. That situation, however, is expected to be resolved imminently, with their return anticipated this week.
In addition to that, another supporters’ group, the Celtic Fans Collective, has recently called on fans to take a stand by refusing to renew their season tickets. This has added further pressure on the club’s decision-makers and highlighted the need for improved communication and engagement between both sides.
After a relatively quiet period regarding updates on his proposal, Haughey has now spoken publicly about the progress being made behind the scenes. He explained that preparations have been ongoing and that everything is now in place for the official rollout. According to him, the initiative will go live on April 17, at which point supporters will be able to begin submitting their applications to join.
He also disclosed that Paul McStay will take on a leading role within the project, acting as both its figurehead and ambassador. Haughey expressed strong belief that the Season Ticket Alliance can serve as a vital link between supporters and the club’s board, providing a structured and effective channel for dialogue.
He acknowledged that other groups are attempting to establish similar lines of communication, but he is confident that this particular initiative will resonate strongly with season ticket holders. The goal is to create a platform that genuinely represents the voice of the supporters while maintaining a constructive relationship with those in charge of the club.
Discussing how the organization will be structured, Haughey outlined plans for governance once the alliance is fully operational. He explained that members will elect five trustees from among themselves, with one of those individuals taking on the role of chairperson. Until that process is completed, Paul McStay will act as the interim chair and the primary spokesperson.

Haughey also took time to praise McStay’s footballing ability, describing him as one of the most unfortunate players in the club’s history. He suggested that circumstances beyond McStay’s control prevented him from achieving even greater recognition during his playing career.
Reflecting on the era in which McStay played, Haughey pointed out that Celtic faced significant financial challenges at the time, while rivals Rangers were able to spend heavily. This imbalance, he implied, limited the opportunities for players like McStay to fully showcase their talents on the biggest stages.
He also mentioned that a serious injury towards the end of McStay’s career further curtailed his impact, preventing him from continuing at the highest level. Despite this, Haughey spoke with great admiration for McStay’s abilities, emphasizing how exceptional he was as a midfielder.
Addressing younger supporters in particular, Haughey encouraged them to watch footage of McStay’s performances online. He admitted that even he had not fully appreciated just how talented the former player was until revisiting those clips. According to Haughey, McStay possessed an all-round skill set that would make him stand out in any era of football.
He went as far as to suggest that if McStay were playing in today’s market, his value would be in the region of £150 million. This statement underlines the high regard in which he holds the former Celtic star.
Turning his attention back to the reaction from the club’s leadership, Haughey clarified that there has been no negative feedback regarding the initiative. While he has not had the opportunity to meet with board members in recent weeks due to a lack of home fixtures, he confirmed that they are fully aware of the project.
He stressed that, to his knowledge, there has been no opposition from within the boardroom. At the same time, he made it clear that the Season Ticket Alliance will operate independently from the club itself. It will not be directly controlled or influenced by Celtic, but instead function at arm’s length.
Haughey emphasized that the initiative will be run according to its own principles and vision, ensuring that it remains focused on representing supporters’ interests. By maintaining this independence, he believes the alliance can operate more effectively as a bridge between fans and the club’s leadership.
Overall, Haughey appears confident that the Season Ticket Alliance can make a meaningful impact. With its official launch just around the corner and a respected figure like Paul McStay at the forefront, the project aims to foster better communication, rebuild trust, and give supporters a stronger collective voice in the future direction of the club.
