The Florida Gators secure an additional commitment for the upcoming season. JUCO catcher AJ Malzone declared his commitment to the school on Thursday via X.

Malzone attended Wabash Valley College for two years. During his sophomore year, he achieved a batting average of .347, recorded 10 home runs, 58 RBIs, and stole 13 bases. He also achieved 36 walks, surpassing his 35 strikeouts.

Given Heyman’s probable transition to the professional level, it is unsurprising that the Gators are pursuing options on the catcher market.

An additional intriguing aspect for the Gators is the eventual destination of Brody Donay. He concluded the season defensively subpar, which may prompt a permanent transition to first base or designated hitter.

According to Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner on X, the Gators are competing for Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney, a highly sought-after transfer in the gateway at present.

Malzone represents the Gators’ second pledge on Thursday, following former Notre Dame right-handed pitcher Ricky Reeth’s announcement of his verbal commitment to Florida.

Florida is anticipated to engage extensively in the transfer portal this summer. They must substitute their starting shortstop, third baseman, and catcher while also augmenting their pitching staff with quality arms.

The return of left-handed pitcher Pierce Coppola for the next season is uncertain, potentially creating an opening in the Gators’ starting rotation.

They require more dependable pitchers in the bullpen as well. The mediocre performance this past season renders it difficult to assume that O’Sullivan will retain all of the same players. Furthermore, left-handed pitcher Jacob Gomberg has joined the transfer portal.
