Rangers have suffered another setback in the transfer market after their proposed move for PSV Eindhoven winger Couhaib Driouech fell through, with conflicting reports now raising further questions about what actually happened behind the scenes at Ibrox.

The Moroccan attacker had been expected to strengthen Derek McInnes’ squad and was even spotted in the stands during Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Jagiellonia Bialystok. That result ultimately saw the Scottish side eliminated from the Europa League after their first-leg defeat, adding to what has already been a frustrating period for the club.

The collapse of the Driouech deal has now created an uncomfortable situation for Rangers, particularly because reports from different sources have offered contrasting explanations for why the transfer failed to materialise.

Conflicting reports emerge over Driouech transfer

There had been significant optimism surrounding Driouech’s potential move to Rangers, with reports suggesting that negotiations had progressed to an advanced stage.

However, that version of events was challenged by Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, a journalist who has followed Driouech’s situation closely.

Elfrink suggested that Rangers and the player were unable to reach an agreement, meaning the proposed transfer eventually collapsed.

The conflicting information has naturally raised eyebrows among Rangers supporters. If personal terms had already been agreed, questions will inevitably be asked about how the negotiations could subsequently break down.

Whatever the precise reason, the failure to sign Driouech represents a significant disappointment for McInnes, particularly because strengthening the wide areas was viewed as an important priority for the Rangers squad.

Medical issue reportedly behind Rangers exit

Another explanation has since emerged regarding the failed transfer.

Chris Jack of Rangers Review reported that Driouech failed his medical after arriving at Ibrox, which ultimately resulted in Rangers abandoning the proposed deal.

That version of events provides a very different picture from the reports suggesting that negotiations over personal terms were responsible for the collapse.

There had already been some concern surrounding the winger’s fitness. Driouech missed PSV’s opening league fixture of the season, leading to speculation that he could have been carrying a minor injury.

If the medical was indeed the reason Rangers pulled out, the club would have been justified in refusing to proceed with a significant financial commitment if their medical team identified an issue.

Rangers were reportedly prepared to spend approximately £7 million on the Moroccan winger, making it understandable that the club would want to be completely satisfied with his physical condition before committing such a sizeable amount.
