Coventry City receive approval following Fikayo Tomori transfer talks, with Southampton star also targeted.

Coventry City have been handed an encouraging update regarding their reported interest in Fikayo Tomori, with AC Milan now prepared to listen to offers for the experienced centre-back as the summer transfer window moves towards its final stages.

The Sky Blues could still make further additions to Frank Lampard’s squad before the window closes, and Tomori has emerged as one of the more intriguing names on their radar. Reports from Italy have previously suggested that Coventry have already made contact regarding the 28-year-old, and Milan’s latest stance could now give them a genuine opportunity to explore a potential deal.

According to Quotidiano Sportivo, Coventry are one of three clubs believed to be offering Tomori an opportunity to leave Serie A. The defender is reportedly valued at approximately £15 million, although his contract situation could potentially influence negotiations because he has only one year remaining on his current agreement with Milan.

Liverpool and Newcastle United are also understood to be interested in the former England international, meaning Coventry would face significant competition if they decide to make a serious approach.

However, there could be one factor working in Coventry’s favour. Tomori has previously worked with Lampard during his time at both Derby County and Chelsea, and the possibility of linking up with his former manager again could make a move to the Championship club more attractive.

AC Milan make Tomori available

Despite the potential opportunity, Coventry already have considerable depth at centre-back.

Liam Kitching and Bobby Thomas formed the preferred central defensive partnership last season, while the summer arrival of Aurele Amenda has provided Lampard with another option in that position.

Tomori has previously spoken about his ambitions beyond football as well as his desire to continue playing for many years.

Speaking in April, he explained that he wanted to continue his playing career until around the age of 35 or 36. He also revealed plans to make use of his Business Management degree later in life, potentially working alongside his father, who is involved in financial matters.

Tomori has enjoyed major success at Milan

Tomori joined AC Milan in 2021, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent transfer.

During his time in Italy, he has established himself as an important figure and helped Milan achieve significant success. He was part of the side that won Serie A and also lifted the Supercoppa.

The defender has gone on to make 214 appearances for the Italian giants, underlining the level of experience he could bring to Coventry if a transfer eventually materialises.

Harwood-Bellis enjoyed another impressive campaign in the Championship last season and remains an important part of Southampton’s squad. Any move would therefore require Coventry to negotiate with the Saints over a player they are likely to value highly.

Harwood-Bellis and Lampard have history

The Southampton defender clashed with Lampard during a Championship meeting between the two clubs last season.

Coventry eventually went on to win the second-tier title, while the incident involving Harwood-Bellis and Lampard attracted attention.

However, Harwood-Bellis later played down the confrontation and insisted that there had been no serious hostility between them.

The defender explained that he had calmly told Lampard, “you are better than that,” rather than angrily confronting the Coventry manager.

He also suggested that his body language showed he was not particularly angry during the exchange. Lampard responded by telling him that he was a young player and should show him respect.

With the incident apparently having been played down by Harwood-Bellis, it remains to be seen whether it would have any influence if Coventry eventually decide to pursue the Southampton captain.

Lampard has already been busy during the summer as he attempts to build a squad capable of competing strongly in the Championship.
