A worrying statistic from Russell Martin’s recent managerial record could spell further trouble for the former Southampton boss, who is now facing mounting pressure at Leicester City.

Tonda Eckert has now taken charge of Southampton for 42 competitive matches on a permanent basis. Although the Saints have produced an inconsistent run of results this season, the German manager has still overseen a relatively strong record.

Southampton have experienced frustrating draws against Birmingham City and Lincoln City, but those results have been balanced by impressive victories against Stoke City and Millwall.

Most importantly, Eckert has suffered defeat in only seven of those 42 matches, a record that deserves considerable credit given the circumstances surrounding the club.

The Saints have also had to deal with a significant points deduction, meaning their current league position does not necessarily reflect how well they have performed on the pitch.

Without that penalty, Southampton would currently be sitting around seventh place in the Championship, putting them inside the expanded play-off positions.

Southampton Could Be In A Worse Position

There have certainly been moments when Eckert’s decisions have attracted criticism.

The draw at Lincoln City, for example, raised questions about some of his tactical choices and substitutions during the match. Supporters may have expected Southampton to take all three points from that fixture, particularly given the club’s ambitions.

However, when the bigger picture is considered, the Saints could arguably be in a much more difficult position had they opted for a different manager.

That becomes particularly obvious when his record is compared with that of Martin.
