Callum McGregor’s post-match actions at Celtic provoke a furious response.

Callum McGregor’s actions following Celtic’s 3-1 Europa League defeat to Ferencváros have become a talking point after footage from the aftermath of the match was shared on X.

The Celtic captain appears to head towards the tunnel as a number of his teammates continue across the pitch to acknowledge supporters who stayed behind inside Celtic Park following another disappointing result for Martin O’Neill’s team.

In the footage, Kieran Tierney and Cameron Carter-Vickers can be seen making their way towards the North Curve, where supporters had gathered, while McGregor appears to move in the opposite direction towards the tunnel.

The incident occurred at the end of an extremely difficult evening for Celtic, who suffered their second consecutive heavy defeat in the space of just five days.

One post accompanying the footage described McGregor as being “distraught” and “clearly furious” before claiming that the midfielder cut short the lap of honour. The post also suggested that Tierney and Carter-Vickers were left to acknowledge the Green Brigade and the other supporters who remained in the stadium after Celtic’s defeat.

The video quickly attracted attention because of McGregor’s position within the Celtic squad. As captain and one of the club’s longest-serving players, he is regularly expected to lead the team during difficult moments and stand alongside his teammates when facing supporters after disappointing performances.

However, the footage only captures a brief part of the aftermath and does not provide the complete context surrounding McGregor’s actions.

Celtic had begun their Europa League league-phase campaign with encouraging intent, but their positive start soon disappeared as Ferencváros took control of the contest. The visitors went ahead before Mika Baur restored parity for Celtic shortly before half-time.

The equaliser, however, did not provide Celtic with the platform they needed. Ferencváros responded almost immediately, scoring again before the interval to regain their advantage.

The Hungarian side then strengthened their position shortly after the restart when former Celtic winger Daniel Arzani found the net to make it 3-1.

Celtic were unable to produce a comeback, leaving supporters frustrated at the final whistle.

The result came only days after Celtic had been beaten 3-0 by Rangers at Ibrox, making the defeat to Ferencváros an especially damaging result for O’Neill’s side.

With another Old Firm meeting against Rangers already approaching on Sunday, the pressure surrounding Celtic has increased considerably.

It is therefore understandable that the clip of McGregor leaving the pitch has generated such a strong response. Supporters can clearly see several Celtic players continuing towards the North Curve while their captain heads away from the area.

Nevertheless, there are other factors to consider before reaching conclusions about what happened.

McGregor still carried out media duties following the match. The midfielder spoke with TNT Sports and also fulfilled responsibilities with Celtic’s own media team, discussing the defeat and the importance of producing a response against Rangers.

Those commitments provide a possible explanation for why he may have been heading towards the tunnel. Rather than deliberately avoiding supporters, he could simply have been making his way towards the next part of his post-match responsibilities.

There is also the possibility that his decision was simply an emotional reaction to another painful result.

McGregor had just experienced another heavy defeat within a matter of days, and the frustration of losing to Rangers before suffering a similar setback against Ferencváros would naturally have made the aftermath particularly difficult.

The Celtic captain later spoke openly about the impact of the current run on the squad, making it clear that the recent results had affected the players.

That context makes it difficult to determine McGregor’s intentions solely from a short social-media clip.

What the footage does show is straightforward: McGregor leaves the playing area while Tierney, Carter-Vickers and other Celtic players remain on the pitch and move towards the supporters.

What it cannot establish is why McGregor chose to leave at that particular moment.

There is no clear evidence from the video alone that he deliberately refused to acknowledge the supporters or intentionally avoided the section where fans were waiting.

Given McGregor’s long association with Celtic, it would also be difficult to use one brief moment immediately after a damaging defeat to define his relationship with the club or its supporters.

The midfielder has spent many years at Celtic and has experienced numerous successes and difficult nights during that time. His status as captain means his actions will naturally receive greater scrutiny, particularly when results are going badly.

Yet his conduct after the match extended beyond the few seconds captured by the circulating footage.

McGregor faced the media, discussed another damaging Celtic result and looked ahead to Sunday’s crucial meeting with Rangers.

Whatever emotions may have influenced his actions immediately after the final whistle, he did not completely avoid responsibility for the defeat.

Instead, he addressed the situation publicly and acknowledged the need for Celtic to respond.
