Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has responded to Wrexham’s tongue-in-cheek Spygate social media stunt ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Championship meeting between the two sides.

The controversy surrounding Southampton’s conduct during last season’s Championship play-off campaign continues to follow the club. Since the details emerged, the incident has become a regular source of jokes, chants and social media parodies from rival supporters and opposing clubs.

Wrexham became the latest club to join in with the banter after using their partnership with internet browser Firefox to produce a video taking aim at Southampton’s controversial scouting activities.

Southampton’s Spygate punishment

Southampton were punished by the EFL in May after admitting to several breaches of the regulations during their play-off campaign.

The consequences were significant. The Saints were expelled from the Championship play-off final, allowing Middlesbrough to take their place after Southampton had admitted to wrongdoing involving their opponents.

The club were also accused of spying on Oxford United and Ipswich Town, meaning the controversy extended beyond the incident that ultimately resulted in their removal from the play-off final.

Southampton subsequently began the 2026/27 campaign under difficult circumstances, with the club receiving a four-point deduction as an additional punishment for the Spygate scandal.

Despite starting the campaign in negative territory, Southampton were widely expected to compete for promotion, and their strong early-season form has already enabled them to wipe out the points deficit.

However, uncertainty remains over Eckert’s position beyond the upcoming international break, with the Football Association still expected to reach a decision regarding his situation.

Wrexham turn Spygate into social media banter

The fixture with Wrexham has added another chapter to the story.

Only a few years ago, Southampton and Wrexham were separated by several divisions, but both clubs now find themselves in the Championship and are regarded as teams with ambitions of reaching the Premier League.

Wrexham’s rapid rise has attracted considerable attention following the investment and ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Welsh club climbed from the National League to the Championship within three seasons and followed that achievement by finishing seventh last campaign.

During the summer, Wrexham announced a partnership with Firefox, the internet browser company, which became the club’s shirt sponsor.

The partnership provided the opportunity for Reynolds and McElhenney to produce a humorous video aimed at Southampton’s Spygate controversy.

The clip made references to Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Oxford, all clubs connected to the saga, while promoting Firefox’s security features.

The message was accompanied by a playful reference to keeping “moles” away from Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground and data.

The post quickly attracted attention before Saturday’s encounter.

Eckert gives his reaction

Eckert was asked whether he had seen Wrexham’s video before Southampton travelled to North Wales.

The Saints head coach confirmed that both he and his players had seen the clip.

“The players have watched it. I’ve seen it last night. It doesn’t change anything,” Eckert said.

The German coach admitted that the entire situation was far from amusing from his perspective, although he did not want to make too much of Wrexham’s attempt at humour.

“You can imagine that the whole situation is not particularly funny for me, but I think that’s all there is to say,” he added.

Eckert’s response suggests that Southampton intend to avoid allowing the social media exchange to become a distraction before an important Championship fixture.

Southampton supporters respond

Wrexham’s post naturally produced plenty of reactions from Southampton supporters, many of whom were clearly unimpressed by the joke.

One Saints fan responded by predicting that Southampton would score five goals against Wrexham again, describing the social media post as “cringey”.

Another supporter turned the criticism back towards Wrexham, writing: “Imagine your club owners doing this. Embarrassing.”

There was also a reference to the current Championship table, with one Southampton fan pointing out that Wrexham were ten places below Eckert’s team.

“Mind the gap guys. Maybe you should spy it might save your season,” the supporter wrote alongside an image of the league standings.

Another Saints supporter suggested that they would return to the conversation after Cyle Larin scored Southampton’s fourth goal on Saturday.

The reaction demonstrated that Wrexham’s attempt at humour had certainly succeeded in generating discussion ahead of the match.

Not every Wrexham fan approved

Interestingly, not everyone associated with Wrexham was convinced that the social media stunt was a good idea.

One Wrexham supporter questioned the decision to provoke Southampton so close to the match, asking why the club appeared to be providing their opponents with extra motivation.

“Why are we writing Southampton’s team talk for them?” the fan wrote.

That reaction highlights the potential downside of pre-match banter. While such content can create engagement and entertainment for supporters online, it can also give the opposition additional motivation heading into a competitive fixture.

Southampton focused on the pitch

Despite the attention surrounding the video, Southampton will be hoping that the match itself provides the biggest talking point.

The Saints have made a strong start to the season despite beginning with a four-point deduction, and their recent attacking form has provided further encouragement.

The club have scored 14 goals across their last two league matches, underlining the attacking threat available to Eckert’s side.

Cyle Larin has also continued his excellent start to the campaign. The forward has scored seven goals in seven games, making him one of Southampton’s most dangerous attacking players.
