How has Morgan Whittaker performed in MLS since his high-priced departure from Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough have seen several players leave the club for substantial transfer fees and subsequently prove that they were worth the investment made in them. The latest player to embark on a new challenge away from the Riverside is Morgan Whittaker, who has moved to Major League Soccer with Colorado Rapids.

The winger departed Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window following a productive spell with the Championship club. His move came after Boro narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, suffering disappointment in the Championship play-off final against Hull City at Wembley.

The defeat was a particularly frustrating outcome for Middlesbrough supporters, who had hoped their team would finally return to the top flight. Instead, the club prepared for another campaign in the Championship, extending their wait to a tenth consecutive season in England’s second tier.

Despite that disappointment, Middlesbrough have made an encouraging beginning to the 2026/27 Championship campaign. The club will be hoping their positive performances can continue as they look to challenge for promotion again and build momentum as the season progresses.

Whittaker, meanwhile, decided to take his career in a different direction.

The former Plymouth Argyle player joined Colorado Rapids in MLS for a reported $10.7 million transfer fee. The deal represented a club-record signing for the American side and immediately placed significant expectations on the 25-year-old.

With such a substantial fee involved, Whittaker was expected to make an immediate impact in the United States. Fortunately for the player and his new club, he wasted very little time showing what he could offer.

Whittaker makes impressive MLS start

Whittaker had enjoyed an excellent final campaign with Middlesbrough before leaving England. He finished his last season at the Riverside with 14 goals, underlining his importance to the team and demonstrating why Colorado Rapids were prepared to make such a major financial commitment.

His performances for Boro had attracted attention, and the move to MLS provided him with an opportunity to begin another chapter while attempting to reproduce his goalscoring form.

It did not take long for him to find the net.

Whittaker scored twice in his first start for Colorado Rapids, producing a memorable introduction against Seattle Sounders in late September. The brace immediately gave Rapids supporters a glimpse of the attacking qualities that had made him such an important player for Middlesbrough.

His quick impact will have been particularly encouraging considering the expectations surrounding a player who arrived for a record fee.

The move also raises an interesting question for Middlesbrough supporters: have Boro actually become a better team since Whittaker’s departure, or is his absence being felt?

Whittaker’s performances in MLS may provide an indication of how significant his contribution could have remained had he stayed in the Championship.

Versatility proving valuable

One of Whittaker’s biggest strengths is his ability to operate in several attacking positions. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated that he can play both centrally and from wider areas, giving managers additional tactical options.

Colorado Rapids appear to be taking advantage of that versatility.

After scoring his two goals against Seattle Sounders while operating as an attacking midfielder, Whittaker was moved into a wider role for the team’s next fixture against LA Galaxy.

He started on the flank during a closely contested match that Colorado Rapids eventually lost 3-2. Despite the result, his willingness to adapt to a different position once again highlighted the range of options he can provide.

Whittaker was then restored to the attacking midfield position for the meeting with San Jose Earthquakes. That match ended in a 1-1 draw, before he moved back into a wider role against Minnesota.

The Minnesota encounter proved to be another entertaining contest, with the two teams playing out a 2-2 draw.

His positional flexibility has therefore been evident from the beginning of his MLS career. Rather than being restricted to one specific role, Whittaker has already been used in different areas depending on what his team requires.

That could become an important feature of his time in Colorado, particularly as the club looks to get maximum value from its record investment.

Whittaker adapting quickly

So far, Whittaker has made five appearances for Colorado Rapids this season, and he has completed the full 90 minutes in three of those matches.

That level of involvement suggests the club already sees him as an important part of its plans. His ability to remain on the pitch for extended periods should also help him develop a better understanding with his new teammates.

Against Minnesota in his most recent appearance, Whittaker was replaced during the latter stages of the second half. By that point, he had already experienced a demanding run of matches since arriving in MLS.

The early signs are certainly encouraging for both the player and Colorado Rapids. His goalscoring debut, combined with his versatility and regular involvement, suggests he is beginning to settle into his new surroundings.

For Middlesbrough, meanwhile, the decision to allow Whittaker to leave will continue to attract attention as the Championship season develops.

The 25-year-old was an important attacking player for Boro, particularly after scoring 14 goals during his final campaign. Losing that production could have represented a significant blow, although Middlesbrough will hope their squad can compensate for his departure.

Whittaker’s early performances in America suggest Colorado Rapids may have secured a player capable of making a major contribution.

There is still plenty of the season to come, so it would be premature to judge the move fully. However, scoring twice in his first start and already demonstrating his ability to operate in different positions represents an excellent beginning.

If Whittaker can maintain that level of form, his move could quickly become one of the more successful transfers involving an MLS club.

For now, the former Middlesbrough forward appears to be adapting well to life in the United States, while his versatility is giving Colorado Rapids plenty of tactical flexibility.

The coming months should reveal whether he can consistently reproduce the goalscoring form that made him such a valuable player for Middlesbrough.
