Hearts clarify Claudio Braga substitution and touchline exchange after certain substitutes were called out.
Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken has revealed that Claudio Braga was substituted during the 1-1 Conference League draw with Nordsjaelland because the Portuguese attacker was in danger of receiving a second yellow card.
Braga was booked only five minutes after kick-off for pulling an opponent’s shirt. He then committed three more fouls as the contest developed, leaving Vrancken concerned that another infringement could have resulted in his dismissal.
The Hearts boss therefore decided to act after 70 minutes, replacing Braga with Sabah Kerjota. Vrancken later explained that the decision was made to protect his team from playing the closing stages with ten men.
“He pulled a shirt already two times. So we couldn’t take the risk, because I knew that the next little fault was for sure a second yellow card,” Vrancken said.
Braga appeared unhappy with the decision and spoke to his manager on the touchline after coming off. The forward placed his fingers against his head while discussing the change, seemingly indicating that he believed he could remain focused despite the booking.
However, Vrancken said Braga eventually accepted the reasoning behind the decision. The striker told him after the game that his manager had been right to remove him.

The substitution was particularly significant because Hearts had been in control for long periods and were protecting a narrow advantage. Oisin McEntee had put the Scottish side ahead in the 33rd minute, and they created several opportunities to extend their lead.
Instead, Hearts were punished late in the match when Nicklas Rojkjaer’s deflected effort found the net four minutes from full-time. The goal denied Vrancken’s team a valuable victory and forced them to settle for a point.
Vrancken was understandably frustrated by the late equaliser, because he felt Hearts had performed strongly for most of the contest. He praised the team’s dominance both with and without the ball during the opening 70 minutes.
The Hearts manager said his players had shown aggression and controlled the game against a Nordsjaelland side they knew would provide a difficult challenge. He described the late goal as a major disappointment after such a convincing performance.
However, Vrancken also identified an area that frustrated him: the contribution of the substitutes introduced during the latter stages.
The manager specifically expressed disappointment with the energy provided by Kerjota and JJ Williams after they entered the game. He expected the replacements to bring greater intensity, help Hearts keep possession and deal more effectively with the pressure Nordsjaelland applied late on.
Vrancken stressed that substitutions are not simply made for the sake of changing personnel. When fresh players enter the pitch, he expects them to add something different and provide the team with extra energy at a crucial stage.
He said Hearts had previously received strong contributions from players coming off the bench. On this occasion, though, he felt the replacements did not provide enough of the impact.
The manager was asked whether his criticism was aimed at Kerjota and Williams. He confirmed that they were the players he had been referring to, while also making a distinction between their performances and those of the other substitutes.
According to Vrancken, Kings performed his role effectively, while Mato also completed the task expected of him. Jordi Altena was also praised for handling a position he had not occupied for a long time.
Vrancken acknowledged that Kerjota attempted to carry out his responsibilities, particularly by trying to deal with his one-on-one situations. He also said Williams competed in the duels and did what was expected of him.
Nevertheless, the Hearts manager believed both players could have offered more after being introduced. He wanted them to show greater influence when the team needed fresh energy.
Despite the criticism, Vrancken did not place excessive blame on the two substitutes. Instead, he described it as part of their development and a lesson for difficult moments.
His message was straightforward: when players are brought onto the pitch, they must be prepared to put themselves in the service of the team. Every substitute must recognise when the team needs them and respond with intensity.
For Hearts, the draw represented a frustrating conclusion to an otherwise impressive European display. They had controlled much of the match, created opportunities and looked capable of securing all three points, only for a deflected late strike to change the outcome.
Vrancken will take encouragement from the overall performance while demanding improvements from his substitutes. Braga’s removal showed the difficult decisions required during a tight European match, with the Hearts boss unwilling to risk losing a key attacker to a second yellow card.
The reaction from Braga suggests the disagreement was quickly resolved, while Vrancken’s comments about the substitutes provide a clear warning that every player must be ready to make an immediate impact when called upon.
That decision ultimately protected Hearts from the possibility of a red card, but the late equaliser ensured the tactical change and the manager’s substitutions became major talking points after an evening when victory had appeared within reach.
