A £6 million deal for Derby and Millwall’s move for a League One star signal the start of the Championship transfer window.
Summer Business Begins Across the Championship
The summer transfer window is now fully underway, and clubs throughout the Championship are wasting little time in strengthening their squads ahead of the new campaign.

With players preparing to return for pre-season training in the coming weeks, recruitment departments are working around the clock to identify targets, complete deals and position their teams for a successful season.
From ambitious promotion contenders to clubs aiming to avoid a relegation battle, activity is increasing rapidly across the division. Stoke City and many of their rivals are already involved in a number of transfer discussions as preparations gather pace.
Several notable deals have already been completed, while a host of other moves are progressing behind the scenes as managers and sporting directors look to reshape their squads.
Millwall Complete Move for Rising Midfield Talent
One of the first significant deals of the summer has seen Millwall secure the signing of highly-rated midfielder Jenson Metcalfe from Bradford City.
The 21-year-old joins the Lions for an undisclosed seven-figure transfer fee after an excellent campaign that established him as one of the brightest young talents in League One.
Manager Alex Neil already had a variety of midfield options available last season, including Casper De Norre, Derek Mazou-Sacko, Luke Cundle, Barry Bannan, Billy Mitchell and loan signing Will Smallbone.
Despite those options, Millwall have moved decisively to strengthen further by bringing in a player viewed as having considerable long-term potential.
Metcalfe began his career in Everton’s academy before spending time on loan at Chesterfield in League Two. He later joined Bradford City permanently last summer and quickly became a key figure.
His performances helped Bradford enjoy a strong season, and he notably scored against Port Vale during the club’s push towards the play-offs.
His contribution earned widespread recognition, including a nomination for the League One Player of the Year award, although that honour ultimately went to Leyton Orient striker Dom Ballard.
Bradford Boss Praises Metcalfe’s All-Round Ability
Bradford manager Graham Alexander has previously spoken glowingly about the qualities that made Metcalfe such an important player.
Alexander explained that modern football often categorises midfielders as either defensive or attacking specialists, but he believes Metcalfe possesses the complete package.
The Bradford boss highlighted the youngster’s intelligence, athleticism, speed and work rate, alongside his technical ability to pass effectively and contribute goals.
He also praised the player’s attitude and professionalism, noting that he continually seeks ways to improve.
According to Alexander, Metcalfe regularly analyses data, requests additional footage and actively engages with coaches to enhance his understanding of the game.
Those characteristics have helped accelerate his development and convinced Millwall that he can thrive at Championship level.
Millwall Also Linked With Kyle Joseph
Millwall’s transfer activity may not stop with Metcalfe.
The London club have also been linked with a potential £5 million move for Hull City striker Kyle Joseph.
Although speculation has increased in recent days, reports indicate that no formal bid has yet been submitted.
However, there is believed to be genuine interest from another Championship club, while additional teams are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Joseph’s future remains uncertain, and Hull may face difficult decisions regarding player sales during the current transfer window.
Should Millwall decide to pursue the forward aggressively, competition for his signature appears likely.
Derby County Closing In On Bobby Clark Return
Elsewhere, Derby County are working hard to secure the permanent signing of midfielder Bobby Clark.
The Rams are reportedly in negotiations with Red Bull Salzburg regarding a deal worth around £6 million.
Clark spent last season on loan at Pride Park and became a popular figure among supporters thanks to his performances and attitude.
The 21-year-old contributed three goals and three assists across 42 appearances during the campaign and played a significant role in Derby’s progress.
His impact extended beyond the pitch, with reports suggesting he became a well-liked member of the dressing room.
The former Liverpool midfielder has even spent part of his summer break with Derby teammate Dion Sanderson, highlighting the strong relationships he developed during his loan spell.
Salzburg Looking To Recover Investment
Red Bull Salzburg are believed to be seeking a substantial fee for Clark.
The Austrian club originally paid Liverpool approximately £8 million to secure his services and are eager to recover much of that investment.
Their managerial situation is also changing, with Rangers boss Danny Rohl expected to take charge in Austria.
Despite Salzburg’s valuation, Derby remain optimistic that an agreement can be reached.
Manager John Eustace has repeatedly praised Clark’s development throughout the season.
Reflecting on the player’s progress, Eustace noted that Clark initially struggled to adapt following his first appearance against West Bromwich Albion.
However, he highlighted the midfielder’s determination, commitment and willingness to improve.
Those qualities ultimately helped Clark establish himself as a key player, and Eustace believes there is still significant room for further development.
Birmingham City Secure Jhon Solis Permanently
Birmingham City have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Jhon Solis from Girona.
Although the transfer fee has not been disclosed, the move represents an important piece of business for the Blues.
The Colombian spent the second half of last season on loan at St Andrew’s and impressed sufficiently to earn a permanent contract.
Solis quickly developed strong partnerships with fellow midfielders Paik Seung-ho and Tomoki Iwata.
Those relationships were evident both on the pitch and around the training ground, where the trio appeared comfortable working together.
Birmingham view Solis as an important part of their future plans and are expected to continue strengthening their midfield during the summer.
Birmingham Planning Further Reinforcements
Despite securing Solis permanently, Birmingham are still expected to recruit additional midfield talent.
The club must replace departing midfielder Tommy Doyle while also ensuring sufficient competition for places.
After finishing 10th in the Championship last season, Birmingham are targeting further improvement.
The aim will be to challenge for a play-off position and potentially secure a top-eight finish.
Club officials understand that strengthening key areas of the squad will be essential if those ambitions are to be achieved.
Consequently, further arrivals are anticipated before the transfer window closes.
Bristol City Explain Sinclair Armstrong Departure
Bristol City have also been active, although one of their biggest recent decisions involved a departure rather than an arrival.
New sporting director James Ellis has explained the reasoning behind the sale of striker Sinclair Armstrong to Turkish side Goztepe.
Ellis acknowledged that Armstrong possessed impressive natural attributes but felt the transfer represented the best outcome for all parties involved.
He stressed that football decisions often involve balancing sporting considerations with business realities.
When an attractive opportunity arises, clubs must evaluate it carefully.
In this instance, Bristol City concluded that accepting the offer was the correct course of action.
Ellis Wants Positive Exit Culture
Beyond discussing the transfer itself, Ellis also outlined his vision for improving how departing players are treated.
He revealed a desire to establish a more positive exit culture within the club.
Part of that strategy involves formally recognising players’ contributions before they leave.
Ellis believes such gestures demonstrate appreciation and respect, helping maintain positive relationships even after a player’s departure.
He expressed hope that Armstrong will succeed in the next stage of his career while maintaining that the decision ultimately benefited everyone involved.
Swansea City Strengthen Off The Pitch
Swansea City are among several Championship clubs making important off-field appointments.
The Welsh side are expected to appoint Ben Stevens as their new sporting director.
Stevens previously worked as assistant sporting director at Crystal Palace and will now take on a more prominent role.
One of his first major tasks will involve addressing uncertainty surrounding prolific striker Zan Vipotnik.
The forward continues to attract significant attention from clubs both in England and abroad.
Vipotnik Drawing Interest From Across Europe
Interest in Vipotnik has intensified considerably.
West Ham United have reportedly monitored the striker since January, while clubs in Italy have also been linked.
Portuguese giants Benfica are believed to have made enquiries regarding his availability.
Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon, Toulouse and Brighton have also been credited with interest.
Swansea previously valued the striker at approximately £15 million during the January transfer window.
However, after signing a new long-term contract that ties him to the club for another four years, his valuation may have increased significantly.
The club are therefore in a strong position should offers arrive during the summer.
West Brom Target Young Premier League Prospects
West Bromwich Albion are continuing to strengthen under their own recruitment strategy.
Reports indicate that the Baggies are close to signing 19-year-old Liverpool defender Carter Pinnington.
In addition, discussions are reportedly ongoing regarding a move for Chelsea forward Jimmy Jay Morgan.
The proposed deal for Morgan could be worth around £1.3 million.
Both players fit West Brom’s focus on acquiring talented young prospects with significant development potential.
Should the transfers be completed, they would add further depth and quality to the squad ahead of the new season.
Steven Schumacher Reinforces Bolton Squad
Former Stoke City manager Steven Schumacher is also busy reshaping his squad following Bolton Wanderers’ return to the Championship.
The manager has already completed two notable additions from Scottish football.
Attacking midfielder David Watson has arrived from Kilmarnock for an undisclosed fee.
Meanwhile, defender Ben Davies has joined on a free transfer following his departure from Rangers.
The pair are expected to play important roles as Bolton seek to establish themselves back in the second tier.
Stoke City Continue Summer Preparations
At Stoke City, transfer activity remains ongoing as the club prepares for another Championship campaign.
The Potters have already confirmed several important decisions regarding their squad.
Lewis Baker and Steven Nzonzi have both departed following the expiration of their contracts.
Meanwhile, defender Ben Wilmot has had his stay extended after the club activated an option in his deal.
Stoke have also turned Milan Smit’s loan spell into a permanent transfer, ensuring continuity within the squad.
While those moves represent useful progress, further recruitment remains a priority.
The club are hopeful of bringing in at least a couple of new additions before manager Mark Robins welcomes his players back for pre-season training later this month.
As the transfer window gathers momentum, Stoke and their Championship rivals are expected to remain busy, with many more deals likely to be completed in the weeks ahead.
