A former Middlesbrough player rapidly secures a new club after leaving Riverside this summer.
Former Middlesbrough midfielder Dan Barlaser has wasted little time securing the next chapter of his career after leaving the Riverside Stadium this summer. The 29-year-old, who became a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Boro, has completed a move to MK Dons, where he will once again work under manager Paul Warne, a coach who played a major role in some of the most successful moments of his career.
Barlaser officially departed Middlesbrough after the club decided not to extend his stay beyond the end of his contract. His deal expired at the conclusion of the season, allowing him to join another club as a free agent from July 1. It did not take long for the experienced midfielder to attract interest, with MK Dons moving swiftly to secure his signature ahead of the new campaign.

The move reunites Barlaser with Warne, the manager under whom he flourished during their time together at Rotherham United. Their previous partnership proved highly successful, helping Rotherham achieve promotion while Barlaser established himself as one of the standout midfielders in the division. The familiarity between player and manager is expected to ease his transition into life at Stadium MK and could prove beneficial for both parties as they prepare for the upcoming League One season.
Barlaser originally arrived at Middlesbrough in January 2023 with hopes of strengthening the club’s midfield options. Having impressed with Rotherham, there was optimism that he could replicate that form at the Riverside. However, despite arriving with a strong reputation, he found it difficult to cement a regular place in the starting lineup. Competition for midfield positions and changing circumstances meant he was unable to consistently showcase the qualities that had made him such an influential performer at his previous club.
As opportunities became increasingly limited, Barlaser spent the final year of his Middlesbrough contract away from the club. He joined Scottish Premiership side Hibernian on loan in an effort to gain regular first-team football and rebuild momentum. The temporary spell provided him with valuable playing time before his contract with Boro eventually came to an end this summer.
Following confirmation of his move to MK Dons, Barlaser expressed his excitement about beginning a fresh challenge. He admitted that the opportunity to work with Paul Warne again was one of the biggest reasons behind his decision to sign for the club. According to the midfielder, he enjoyed the finest football of his career while playing under Warne and believes that familiar environment can help him rediscover his best form.
Barlaser also spoke positively about the facilities at his new club, highlighting how impressed he was after seeing the setup. He explained that joining MK Dons at this stage of their journey was particularly appealing because the squad had enjoyed a successful campaign last season by earning promotion. The midfielder believes there is genuine momentum around the club and is eager to contribute as they aim to build on that achievement in the coming months.
For MK Dons, the signing represents the addition of an experienced midfielder with extensive knowledge of English football. Barlaser has accumulated valuable experience across different divisions and brings leadership, technical quality and composure in possession. Those attributes are expected to strengthen an already competitive midfield group as the club looks to establish itself following promotion.
Paul Warne was equally enthusiastic after completing the deal and explained why he was so pleased to welcome Barlaser back into his squad. The manager pointed to their successful history together, recalling the promotions they achieved during their time at Rotherham United. Warne also praised the midfielder’s character, describing him as a highly motivated professional who contributes positively both on and off the pitch.
In addition to his personality, Warne highlighted several aspects of Barlaser’s game that he believes will benefit MK Dons. He praised the midfielder’s technical ability, describing him as an excellent footballer with an impressive passing range. Warne noted that Barlaser is always eager to move the ball forward and create attacking opportunities rather than simply retaining possession. He also emphasized the player’s effectiveness from set pieces, an area where he has consistently demonstrated quality throughout his career.
The manager added that Barlaser should settle quickly because he already has strong relationships within the squad and coaching staff. He has previously played alongside Ben Wiles, another familiar face from their Rotherham days, while also working with assistant Richie Barker. Those existing connections, Warne believes, should make the adjustment straightforward and allow the midfielder to integrate seamlessly into the dressing room.
For Barlaser, the transfer offers an opportunity to make a fresh start after a challenging spell at Middlesbrough. Although his time at the Riverside did not unfold as he had hoped, he now joins a club where he is trusted by a manager who understands his strengths and knows how to get the very best out of him. With confidence, familiarity and regular football once again within reach, the midfielder will be hoping to revive the form that made him such a key player earlier in his career and help MK Dons achieve their ambitions in the seasons ahead.
