A Motherwell player has been offered to Celtic.

Celtic reportedly had the opportunity to sign Motherwell left-back Emmanuel Longelo during their search for defensive cover, but the club’s recruitment department ultimately decided that Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo was the better option.

According to journalist Scott Burns, Longelo was presented to Celtic late in the transfer window as the Hoops looked for another player capable of operating on the left side of defence. Celtic were assessing their options because Kieran Tierney had an injury concern, while Liam Scales was required to fill the position during the recent match against Aberdeen.

The situation eventually resulted in Celtic completing a loan agreement for Emenalo from Chelsea. The move had been under discussion for several weeks, although it was not straightforward. The 18-year-old had already visited Celtic’s Lennoxtown training centre earlier in the window, but the club delayed making a final decision while assessing his fitness.

Celtic also had to contend with competition for the youngster’s signature, with Queens Park Rangers and Watford reportedly showing interest. Despite those complications, the Scottish champions eventually decided to proceed with the temporary deal.

Burns provided further insight into Celtic’s decision while speaking on Hotline Live. He explained that Longelo had indeed been offered to Celtic, but the club’s recruitment team preferred the profile of Emenalo.

That revelation provides an interesting insight into how Celtic approached their search for additional defensive depth. Longelo had emerged as a potential candidate because of his experience with Motherwell and his ability to play naturally at left-back.

Celtic, however, ultimately chose to pursue the younger Chelsea defender instead.

There was reportedly also an expectation from Longelo’s side that he could leave Motherwell. CeltsAreHere understands that the defender was keen on a move away from Fir Park and would have been interested in joining Celtic had the opportunity materialised.

Longelo only joined Motherwell from Birmingham City during the summer transfer window, but his name was nevertheless linked with Celtic as the Hoops examined possible solutions for their left-sided defensive position.

The fact that Celtic were considering several alternatives highlights the uncertainty surrounding the position. Tierney remains the first-choice option when fit, but his injury situation created a need for additional cover. Scales has demonstrated that he can perform effectively on the left, although Celtic were clearly interested in having another specialist available.

Emenalo ultimately became that player.

The Chelsea academy prospect completed a straight loan move to Celtic, with the agreement containing no option for the Scottish club to purchase him permanently at the end of the season. His arrival represents an opportunity for the teenager to gain valuable first-team experience while providing Celtic with another defensive option.

The youngster was officially announced before Celtic’s match against Aberdeen, but he was not included in the matchday squad. As a result, supporters will have to wait a little longer before seeing Emenalo make his first appearance in the famous green and white.

His arrival should give manager Martin O’Neill a more natural left-sided defensive option to use behind Tierney. That could prove particularly useful if Tierney’s fitness problems continue or if Celtic need to manage his workload during a demanding schedule.

At the same time, Scales has already shown that Celtic are not completely dependent on having another specialist left-back. His performance against Aberdeen demonstrated his versatility and ability to cover the position when required.

Nevertheless, adding Emenalo gives O’Neill another choice and should provide greater squad depth as the season develops.

For Longelo, meanwhile, the outcome leaves him at Motherwell despite having been considered as a possible solution by Celtic. His situation demonstrates how quickly transfer plans can change during the final stages of a window.

Celtic apparently assessed the available options before deciding that Emenalo represented the strongest fit for their requirements. Although Longelo was put forward and reportedly wanted the move, the recruitment team chose to go in a different direction.

The decision also reflects Celtic’s willingness to look towards younger players with potential rather than simply adding an experienced option. Emenalo is only 18, but his connection with Chelsea and the opportunity to develop at Celtic could make the loan an intriguing move for all parties.

For Celtic, the immediate priority will be ensuring that the teenager settles quickly and becomes comfortable within O’Neill’s system. The club will hope he can provide reliable cover whenever Tierney is unavailable and reduce the pressure on Scales to operate outside his preferred position.

Longelo, meanwhile, will remain with Motherwell and will now have to concentrate on his own season after the possibility of a move to Celtic failed to materialise.

Ultimately, Celtic had two potential solutions in front of them and selected Emenalo. Burns’ revelation that Longelo was offered to the club but rejected in favour of the Chelsea youngster gives supporters another glimpse into the thinking behind Celtic’s recruitment strategy.
