An official announcement confirms the manager’s dismissal as the former Newcastle United captain agrees to take charge.

West Ham United have confirmed the departure of Nuno Espírito Santo, with former Newcastle United captain Scott Parker agreeing to take over as the club’s new manager.

The Hammers have acted after a disappointing start to their Championship campaign, with consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion leaving them eighth in the table.

Nuno had been expected to lead the club straight back to the Premier League following their relegation last season. However, after 13 league matches, West Ham are four points away from the automatic promotion places, prompting the board to make a change.

West Ham confirm Nuno’s departure

The club announced on Tuesday morning that Nuno had left his position with immediate effect.

In its statement, West Ham explained that the decision followed a detailed assessment of the team’s performances and the opening period of the Championship season.

The board believes a managerial change is necessary to keep the club’s objectives and expectations on course. The announcement also confirmed that assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have departed alongside Nuno.

West Ham thanked all three members of staff for their work and commitment during their time at the London Stadium, while wishing them well for the future.

The statement added that the process of finding a replacement was already underway. It also confirmed that club officials would not make further comments until a new head coach had been appointed.

Noble takes temporary charge

With an away fixture against Cardiff City approaching, West Ham needed to make immediate arrangements for first-team preparations.

The club confirmed that sporting director Mark Noble would work alongside Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville to oversee the squad ahead of Wednesday evening’s Championship match.

Their temporary responsibility gives the players continuity while the club finalises its search for a permanent successor.

However, the expectation is that Parker will soon take charge, potentially arriving in time to begin preparing the team for the next stage of the campaign.

Parker agrees to return

West Ham have moved quickly to identify Nuno’s replacement, with Parker agreeing to become the club’s next manager. An official appointment is expected in the coming days.

The 46-year-old is a familiar name to supporters, having previously represented and captained the Hammers during a four-year spell.

His performances at Upton Park earned him several player of the year awards and established a strong connection with the club. His return would therefore represent more than simply another managerial appointment.

Parker has been without a job since leaving Burnley at the end of last season. He now appears ready to return to management with a club where he already has a history.

Promotion experience offers encouragement

One of the main reasons Parker is an attractive option is his record of guiding teams out of the Championship.

He secured promotion to the Premier League with Burnley and has also achieved the same objective with Fulham and Bournemouth.

That experience could prove valuable as West Ham attempt to recover from relegation at the first opportunity. The club entered the season with considerable expectations and a squad assembled to compete for an immediate return to the top flight.

However, their recent results have raised doubts about whether Nuno could deliver that target. Losing consecutive home matches against Southampton and West Brom proved costly, leaving the Hammers outside the automatic promotion positions.

Parker will be expected to bring greater consistency and make full use of the quality available in the squad.

A major opportunity at the London Stadium

Taking charge of West Ham represents a significant opportunity for Parker. The club have the support, resources and ambition to return to the Premier League, but the new manager will need to turn those advantages into results.

His previous promotions demonstrate an understanding of the demands of the Championship. Nevertheless, success with Burnley, Fulham and Bournemouth does not guarantee that the same formula will work at West Ham.

The immediate challenge will be to lift confidence, improve performances and close the four-point gap to the automatic promotion places.

The timing of the appointment is also important. With the season already underway, Parker will have limited time to assess the squad before facing a demanding run of fixtures.

Supporters will hope that his familiarity with the club helps him settle quickly and build a positive relationship with the dressing room.

For now, Nuno’s departure is confirmed, while Parker’s arrival is expected to follow shortly. West Ham have made their decision after reviewing a difficult opening to the campaign.

The pressure will now shift to the former Newcastle captain to show that his promotion record can help deliver the outcome the Hammers wanted when they began the season: an immediate return to the Premier League and restore belief among a frustrated support.
