Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf: Everything You Should Know About Their Marriage and Family
The tennis power couple got married in 2001.
Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf are a love match.
While he admits to being “taken by” the fellow tennis player in the early 1990s, the couple would not marry until 10 years later.
Agassi, who previously married actress Brooke Shields, famously told Forbes India that the “highest point of his life” was when Graf accepted his marriage proposal.
“She was the hardest to win,” he stated.
In a 2014 interview with The Cut, Agassi stated that he first admired Graf and appreciated her from afar. The tennis power couple, who have since retired from the sport, married in 2001 and have two children.
“What has overcome everything has been our common platform and fundamental orientation to life. “It’s better to be lucky than good sometimes,” Agassi told Parade of himself and Graf. “I don’t feel like I have any answer to how to have successful relationships, but I do feel overwhelmed with the joy that I feel every day.”
From their initial meeting to their marriage and family life, here’s all you need to know about Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf’s relationship.
Agassi had a crush on Graf before meeting her.

Agassi had a crush on his future bride before they met in person. “I’ve had a crush on Steffi since I first saw her doing an interview on French TV,” he said in his book, Open. “I was thunderstruck, dazzled by her understated grace, her effortless beauty.”
Following the French Open in 1991, Agassi attempted to reach out to his infatuation. “But she didn’t respond,” he said in his book.

Agassi got an opportunity to meet Graf after winning his first Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon in 1992. She won the women’ singles tennis title at the same tournament that year. Agassi was “dying to go” to the Wimbledon Ball, which he had heard about for years because the men’s champion had the opportunity to dance with the women’s winner. He even bought a tuxedo from Harrods for the occasion, but was told that the dance had been cancelled.
“I won’t get to dance with Steffi, but there will be a sort of consolation match: an official introduction. I’m looking forward to that all night. “Then it happens,” he writes in his book. “Shaking her hand, I inform Steffi that I attempted to contact her at last year’s French Open and hope she did not misinterpret my intentions. I say, “I’d really like to talk to you sometime.”
Years after their initial meeting, their coaches scheduled a practice for them.

Graf questioned why Agassi, who married Shields in 1997, wanted to practise with her in 1999. “Our coaches kind of set up the whole practice and, you know, I was like, ‘Why does he want to practice with me?” she remembered in an interview with Vijay Amritraj.
“He is married. “I have a boyfriend,” she added. “It was all a little confusing to me.”
Graf returned to her hotel room after their practice in Key Biscayne to find a bunch of flowers and a nice card. “We had a brief conversation after that where I kind of said that I’ve got a boyfriend and, you know, all I know is that he’s married,” Graf said, adding that she had no knowledge he was divorcing at the time. When she learnt of his divorce a few weeks later, “things became a little clearer.”
According to Agassi, the cosmos clearly indicated that Graf was the one.

Agassi “figured there was a fifty-fifty shot” Graf was the right one for him. Having having made “one bad call,” he reasoned that his odds may be better. In an interview with The Cut, Agassi stated that the cosmos communicates through whispers and shouts.
He stated that while he was divorcing Shields, the Pretty Baby actress put a photo of Graf’s legs on a heart-shaped magnet on the fridge because she was yearning after them. Agassi stated, “That’s the universe screaming,” and added, “It’s a megaphone.”

Graf and Agassi married in a low-key ceremony only days before their first child was supposed to be born in October 2001. The tennis player recounted in his novel that he and Graf summoned their families and a Nevada judge to their home, where they exchanged vows in their courtyard “barefoot and wearing jeans.” Graf discovered twists of old raffia in a drawer, which the couple repurposed as wedding bands.

The couple have two children: son Jaden Gil Agassi in October 2001 and daughter Jaz Elle Agassi on October 3, 2003. He said in his book that after his daughter was born, he and his wife privately promised that Jaz would not play tennis, just as they did with their son. Jaden, their kid, does not play tennis like his parents. In 2019, the baseball player signed with the University of Southern California, with his ecstatic parents standing behind.
Agassi’s children never realised their parents were famous. Instead, they grew to comprehend why people approached him and Graf in public.
While speaking with PEOPLE in March 2024, Agassi stated, “You go through a whole process of them saying, ‘Well, this makes no sense that the people are coming up as if there’s a huge issue.’ And then they start to understand why it’s such a huge deal.
He went on to say, “They start to realise they’re looking behind the Wizard of Oz curtain and it’s not all that.” So there’s a good balance that is kind of unavoidable throughout the entire process.”

Graf was moved with emotion when Agassi introduced her at the International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2004. “As I attempt to find words worthy to introduce the person that has changed my life, I realise the words have yet to be invented that are large enough, colourful enough, or true enough to express the heart and soul of this woman that I love,” Agassi said the audience during his address.
Agassi closed his speech by describing his wife as “the greatest person” he has ever met. As she grabbed the microphone, an emotional Graf stated, “Not that this occasion isn’t emotional enough, but hearing you are loved so much is amazing.”

In March 2025, the former tennis players told PEOPLE that they now play pickleball at least three times a week, but never compete against one another.
“We prefer to be on the same side of the court,” he remarked.
