Birmingham are set to demand a record fee as Everton enter the race for one of England’s most sought-after players.
Birmingham Face Growing Interest in Key Attacker
Birmingham City could be forced into a major battle to retain one of their most valuable assets this summer, with Everton reportedly joining the list of clubs interested in signing striker Jay Stansfield.
The Blues are preparing for another important Championship campaign after falling short of the playoff places during their first season back in the division. Despite significant investment and high-profile arrivals, including former Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi, Birmingham were unable to secure a top-six finish and ultimately ended the season in 10th place.
While the club remains ambitious and financially powerful, there is increasing pressure to turn that investment into promotion. Expectations around St Andrew’s continue to rise, and supporters will be hoping that another summer of spending can help bridge the gap between mid-table and genuine promotion contention.
However, Birmingham’s ability to hold onto their best players could become increasingly difficult if they fail to achieve Premier League football. Financial backing is important, but ambitious players will naturally want to compete at the highest level, and rival clubs are already beginning to monitor the situation closely.
Premier League Clubs Circle Birmingham Star
Among the clubs showing interest is Everton, who are looking to strengthen several areas of their squad ahead of the new season.
The Merseyside club have already been linked with a move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney following Boro’s disappointment in the Championship playoffs. With Middlesbrough missing out on promotion, Everton are hoping to take advantage of the situation and lure one of their standout performers to the Premier League.
Now, Birmingham could find themselves facing a similar threat.
According to reports from SportsBoom, Everton have entered the race to sign Jay Stansfield, adding further competition to what is already becoming one of the most closely watched transfer pursuits of the summer.
The Toffees are not alone in their admiration for the striker. Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Sunderland have also been credited with interest, creating a crowded field of potential suitors.
As a result, Birmingham may soon face a difficult decision regarding the future of one of their most important attacking players.
Stansfield’s Stock Continues to Rise
Stansfield enjoyed another productive campaign in the Championship and once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the most promising young forwards in English football.
The 23-year-old played a crucial role in Birmingham’s attacking setup, contributing consistently throughout the season. His ability to score goals, create opportunities, and link play made him one of the team’s most influential performers.
Over the course of the league campaign, Stansfield registered 10 goals and six assists, meaning he was directly involved in 16 goals. Those contributions helped Birmingham remain competitive despite falling short of the playoff positions.
His performances have not gone unnoticed.
Interest from multiple clubs has significantly increased his market value, and Birmingham are now reportedly prepared to demand a record-breaking transfer fee if they decide to sell.
Birmingham Ready to Demand Historic Fee
Reports suggest that Birmingham would seek more than €35 million, which equates to approximately £30 million, for the striker this summer.
Such a fee would represent a landmark sale for the club and would surpass previous transfer records. Remarkably, it would also exceed the amount Borussia Dortmund paid to sign Jude Bellingham from Birmingham back in 2020.
That comparison highlights just how highly the club values Stansfield and underlines their determination not to lose him without receiving a substantial financial return.
From Birmingham’s perspective, there is little incentive to sell cheaply. The striker remains one of their most valuable assets and could be central to any promotion challenge during the upcoming campaign.
However, a significant offer from a Premier League side may prove difficult to ignore.
Everton Looking to Strengthen Their Attack
For Everton, the search for attacking reinforcements remains a major priority.
David Moyes guided the club through a solid campaign last season, but the Toffees narrowly missed out on qualifying for European competition. As a result, there is a desire to strengthen the squad and close the gap on the teams competing for continental places.
Several new signings are expected to arrive before the transfer window closes, and adding a striker is believed to be one of the club’s key objectives.
Stansfield fits the profile of a young, talented forward with room for development. His age, versatility, and Championship experience make him an attractive option for clubs looking to build for the future.
However, questions remain over whether he represents the ideal solution to Everton’s attacking issues.
Is Stansfield Worth the Price?
While Stansfield’s talent is undeniable, some observers may question whether he is worth a fee in excess of £30 million.
Although he contributed 16 goals and assists last season, his goalscoring return was not significantly higher than some of Everton’s current forwards.
A comparison of league statistics illustrates this point.
Stansfield scored 10 league goals while recording six assists from 3,312 minutes of football. His expected goals figure stood at 11.35, suggesting his output was broadly in line with the quality of chances he received.
Meanwhile, Thierno Barry managed eight goals despite playing considerably fewer minutes, while Beto scored nine goals from just 1,565 minutes on the pitch.
Neither Barry nor Beto contributed heavily in terms of assists, but both demonstrated an ability to find the back of the net at a comparable rate.
These figures raise an important question for Everton’s recruitment team: would spending more than £30 million on Stansfield significantly improve their attack?
Everton Must Avoid Another Expensive Gamble
The Toffees have experienced mixed success when investing heavily in forwards over recent years. Several expensive attacking signings have struggled to deliver consistently, leaving the club with ongoing problems in the final third.
Given that history, Everton must be careful when evaluating potential targets.
Stansfield undoubtedly possesses quality and potential, but there is no guarantee that he would immediately transform Everton’s attack or solve their long-standing goalscoring issues.
At 23 years old, he still has room to improve, yet stepping up from the Championship to the Premier League presents a significant challenge.
The club must therefore determine whether the financial outlay required would represent value for money or whether resources could be allocated more effectively elsewhere.
One of the Summer’s Hottest Transfer Stories
Despite those concerns, Stansfield remains one of the most sought-after players currently outside the Premier League.
SportsBoom has described him as one of the most active transfer files among top-flight clubs this summer, reflecting the widespread interest in his services.
His age, experience, and attacking versatility ensure that he will remain a popular target throughout the transfer window.
For Birmingham City, the priority will be retaining one of their standout performers as they pursue promotion. For Everton and the other interested clubs, the challenge will be deciding whether his potential justifies the substantial fee required to secure his signature.
As the summer progresses, Stansfield’s future is likely to remain one of the most intriguing transfer stories in English football.
