Birmingham City needs to spend £10m to secure a transfer from Manchester United.
After ending the 2025/26 Championship season in 10th place, expectations surrounding Birmingham City are unlikely to fade anytime soon ahead of the next campaign.
Before a ball was kicked this season, many supporters and pundits expected Blues to at least challenge for a Championship play-off place. However, despite moments of promise throughout the year, Chris Davies’ side were never consistently involved in the race for the top six.
That underwhelming finish has come despite significant investment from Knighthead Capital Management, who have continued to back the manager heavily in the transfer market since taking control of the club. Davies was again supported financially during both transfer windows this season as Birmingham attempted to reshape the squad into one capable of competing at the top end of the division.
While several of the arrivals at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park generated excitement because of either their reputation, potential or transfer fee, not every signing has delivered the desired impact. In fact, criticism has occasionally been directed at the club’s recruitment strategy, with some questioning whether enough proven Championship quality or high-level potential has actually been added to the squad.
With another major summer approaching, Birmingham are expected to once again be active in the transfer market. Davies has already outlined areas where improvements are required, and one position that could demand urgent attention is goalkeeper.
Goalkeeping issues continue to concern Birmingham City
One of the recurring themes throughout Birmingham’s campaign has been the lack of stability between the posts.
Both James Beadle and Ryan Allsop have featured regularly during the season, yet neither has entirely convinced the fanbase that they are the long-term answer for a promotion-chasing side.
Beadle, who joined on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, replaced Allsop as first-choice goalkeeper in October and has largely retained that role ever since. Despite his promising reputation and obvious talent, the 21-year-old has faced criticism at times for mistakes leading to goals, while his overall numbers have not fully silenced doubters.
Across 35 Championship appearances, the Brighton loanee managed eight clean sheets and recorded a negative goals-prevented metric, suggesting he conceded more goals than expected based on the quality of chances faced.
Davies has repeatedly defended the young goalkeeper publicly, insisting he still has confidence in his abilities and long-term development. Reports earlier in the year even suggested Birmingham were considering opening talks with Brighton regarding a permanent transfer.
However, that discussion appears to have cooled in recent months, particularly with greater focus being placed on possible returns for other Brighton loanees such as Ibrahim Osman and Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis.
Meanwhile, Allsop remains a dependable and experienced option at Championship level. The goalkeeper still has one year remaining on his current deal and played a key role during Birmingham’s remarkable League One-winning campaign in 2024/25.
After replacing Bailey Peacock-Farrell earlier that season, Allsop established himself as a reliable figure and helped guide his boyhood club back into the second tier.
Even so, there is a growing sense that Birmingham need a more commanding and consistent presence in goal if they genuinely want to mount a serious push for Premier League promotion next season.
Radek Vitek emerges as ideal target for Blues
One goalkeeper who could solve that issue is Radek Vitek, who impressed significantly during his loan spell with Bristol City this season.
The 22-year-old, currently contracted to Manchester United, enjoyed an outstanding campaign at Ashton Gate and established himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the Championship.
Like Beadle, Vitek still has much of his career ahead of him, but the Czech international appears slightly further along in terms of consistency, maturity and overall performance level.
His displays for Bristol City did not go unnoticed either, as he picked up several post-season awards following an excellent year.
Across 41 Championship appearances, Vitek recorded 12 clean sheets — a tally bettered by only three other goalkeepers in the division. He also produced a save percentage of 71.3 percent and prevented more than five goals beyond expectation, underlining just how influential he was for the Robins throughout the campaign.
Those statistics highlight a goalkeeper capable of winning points for his side rather than simply maintaining standards.
Manchester United future remains uncertain
When Vitek joined Bristol City on loan, Manchester United simultaneously rewarded him with a new contract running until 2028, showing the club still views him as an important long-term prospect.
However, despite his excellent season, uncertainty remains regarding what role he could realistically play at Old Trafford next year.
Reports have suggested the goalkeeper wants to stay and fight for his place under manager Michael Carrick, particularly after United secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League following a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.
Still, breaking into Manchester United’s first team as a young goalkeeper is never straightforward, and opportunities for regular football may remain limited.
That situation could open the door for ambitious Championship clubs such as Birmingham City to test United’s resolve with a significant bid.
Former Chelsea and Czech Republic legend Petr Cech has already spoken positively about Vitek’s ability, even suggesting that Premier League sides may soon begin showing interest in signing him permanently.
According to reports, a deal for the goalkeeper could cost in the region of £10 million this summer — a substantial fee for a Championship side, but potentially one worth paying.
Birmingham City must show ambition
If Birmingham are serious about ending their lengthy absence from the Premier League, then moves of this scale may be necessary.
The club’s owners have repeatedly made it clear they possess ambitious long-term plans, particularly with the proposed move to the enormous 62,000-capacity Powerhouse Stadium in the coming years.
To match those ambitions on the pitch, Birmingham must continue targeting players capable of elevating the squad immediately while also possessing future resale value.
Vitek fits that profile perfectly.
At 22 years old, he combines youth with already-proven Championship quality, and his performances this season suggest he could develop into a top-level goalkeeper in the years ahead.
Unlike some transfer targets who might require significant adaptation time, Vitek has already shown he can handle the intensity and demands of the Championship consistently over a full campaign.
He would also immediately provide greater competition and potentially establish himself as the long-term number one Birmingham currently lack.
Recent meeting may have strengthened interest
Interestingly, Birmingham supporters recently got a close-up look at Vitek’s quality during their 2-1 victory over Bristol City at St. Andrew’s on April 25th.
That result formed part of Blues’ impressive unbeaten finish to the season, offering supporters encouragement heading into the summer.
Although Birmingham ultimately fell short of the play-offs, there were signs toward the end of the campaign that Davies is beginning to build momentum with his squad.
Adding a goalkeeper of Vitek’s calibre could potentially take the team to another level entirely.
The Championship is expected to become even more competitive next season, especially with several strong sides dropping down from the Premier League. That means Birmingham cannot afford to stand still if they genuinely intend to challenge for promotion.
Spending £10 million on a goalkeeper might initially appear excessive for a second-tier club, but elite teams are increasingly built from the back, and reliable goalkeepers often prove decisive over the course of a long campaign.
For Birmingham, signing Radek Vitek would not only strengthen a problematic area of the squad but would also send a powerful message about the club’s ambitions moving forward.
If Blues truly want to establish themselves as serious Premier League contenders before moving into their future stadium project, then pursuing one of the Championship’s standout young goalkeepers could be exactly the type of statement transfer required this summer.
