Birmingham City’s Liam Millar leaves Hull fans furious with “freedom” claim.
Millar enjoying freedom at Birmingham
Liam Millar has found himself at the centre of a growing discussion among Hull City supporters after claiming he has been given more freedom to express himself during his loan spell at Birmingham City than he has experienced elsewhere in his career.
The Canadian winger joined Birmingham during the summer transfer window on a temporary deal, despite having scored for Hull shortly before making the switch. His move came as something of a surprise because he had been involved in Hull’s victory over Coventry City shortly before departing the club.
Since arriving at St Andrew’s, however, Millar has made an encouraging impression and appears to be enjoying his football. The 27-year-old will now be looking to maintain his strong run of form as Birmingham attempt to compete near the top of the Championship.
Millar was particularly influential during Birmingham’s latest league victory, scoring twice as Chris Davies’ side defeated QPR 3-0. The result moved the Blues into fourth position after 11 matches of the Championship campaign.
‘Freedom’ comments spark controversy
Following his impressive display against QPR, Millar spoke about his early experiences with Birmingham and explained why he believes he has been able to perform with greater freedom since joining the club.
His comments appeared to contain an indirect criticism of his previous experiences, something that did not go unnoticed by sections of the Hull City support.
“I said over there, I just feel like I’ve been given the freedom to express myself and to be myself,” Millar said.
“You know, I feel like I’ve not really had that anywhere else in my career where I can really be myself and be me.”
Millar went on to explain that he has been pleased with his start at Birmingham and wants to continue contributing to the team throughout the season.
“So, you know, I’m really happy with how I’ve started life, and I just want to keep going and keep expressing myself, and helping the team as much as I possibly can, and hopefully do what we all know we can do this season,” he added.
While Millar did not directly criticise Hull City or identify any particular manager or coaching staff, some Tigers supporters interpreted his comments as a subtle criticism of his time at the MKM Stadium.
Hull supporters react angrily
The Canadian’s remarks quickly generated discussion among Hull fans on social media, with several supporters expressing their frustration at what they perceived as a criticism of the club.
Some fans went as far as suggesting that Millar should not return to Hull when his loan spell in Birmingham ends.
Others called for the winger to be sold permanently, although there was some uncertainty about whether Birmingham should necessarily be the club to complete a permanent transfer.
One particularly unhappy Hull supporter also offered Millar advice following his comments, highlighting the strength of feeling among some sections of the Tigers fanbase.
The reaction demonstrates how quickly opinions can change when a player on loan makes comments that are interpreted negatively by supporters of his parent club.
Millar’s impressive Birmingham start
Millar’s comments have attracted attention partly because his performances for Birmingham have been positive since arriving at the Championship club.
His two goals against QPR took his Birmingham tally to four goals from seven appearances. That represents an impressive start for a player attempting to establish himself in a new environment.
The winger previously spent time with Liverpool, Basel and Preston North End before joining Hull City. His career statistics show that he has accumulated considerable experience across different levels of football.
As of October 18, 2026, Millar has made one appearance for Liverpool, 98 for Basel, 36 during his loan spell with Preston, and 53 appearances for Hull. His Hull record stands at five goals and eight assists.
His early Birmingham numbers are already attracting attention, particularly because the Blues are competing at the top end of the Championship.
Birmingham chasing promotion
Birmingham currently occupy fourth place in the Championship and remain within touching distance of the league leaders.
The Blues are only three points behind Swansea City at the summit, with the Welsh club having recently suffered defeat against West Ham.
That league position underlines the progress Birmingham have made in a relatively short period.
The club secured promotion from League One during the 2024/25 campaign and have now established themselves as serious contenders in the Championship. Their ability to attract players with significant second-tier experience reflects the progress being made under the current setup.
Millar’s contribution could become increasingly important if Birmingham maintain their promotion challenge throughout the season.
What does the future hold?
Millar’s long-term future remains uncertain because his contract with Hull City currently runs until the summer of 2027.
His loan move means the Tigers still hold his registration, but his latest comments could add another layer of uncertainty over what happens when the current campaign concludes.
Hull themselves have made an encouraging start to life back in the Premier League after earning promotion, and their immediate priority will be maintaining their top-flight status.
If the Tigers manage to avoid relegation, the club could have an opportunity to bring Millar back into their plans. However, the winger’s comments and his strong start at Birmingham could make the situation more complicated.
Could Birmingham make Millar permanent?
One potential outcome could see Birmingham attempt to secure Millar on a permanent basis.
If Davies’ side continues performing well and mounts a genuine promotion challenge, the club may be keen to retain players who have made a significant contribution.
A return to the Premier League would make Birmingham an even more attractive destination for Millar, particularly if he continues to enjoy the freedom and responsibility he has spoken positively about.
For now, though, the Canadian remains a Hull City player on loan at Birmingham.
His performances will continue to be monitored by both sets of supporters, while his comments have ensured that there will be plenty of debate about where his future should lie.
Millar’s next priority will be maintaining his form on the pitch, but his remarks have already created an intriguing subplot surrounding his eventual return to Hull.
