Callum McGregor has made an off-the-pitch decision that has once again sparked discussion about what lies ahead for the Celtic captain. The experienced midfielder has signed with the same player representation agency as former manager Brendan Rodgers, a move that has inevitably led to renewed speculation regarding his long-term future at Parkhead.

McGregor, who is 33 years old and remains one of the club’s most influential figures, has joined Unique Sports Group. The agency already represents Rodgers, who is currently managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah, as well as Celtic striker Adam Idah. Idah’s move to Celtic initially came together during Rodgers’ time in charge in 2024, making the agency’s growing links with key figures connected to the club particularly noteworthy.

Although changing representation is a common step for professional footballers and does not automatically indicate that a transfer is imminent, the timing of McGregor’s decision has naturally prompted fresh debate among supporters and observers. Given the recent reports connecting him with a reunion with Rodgers, the move has only intensified questions about whether the Celtic captain could eventually consider a new challenge away from Glasgow.

McGregor is still contracted to Celtic for another two years, meaning the Scottish champions remain in complete control of his immediate future. Nevertheless, the latest development comes against the backdrop of months of speculation surrounding one of the club’s most respected and decorated players.

For the majority of his professional career, McGregor appeared destined to become a one-club man. Having progressed through Celtic’s youth academy before establishing himself as a regular in the first team, he has developed into one of the club’s modern legends. His leadership, consistency and ability to perform on the biggest occasions have made him an integral part of Celtic’s sustained domestic success over the past decade.

As club captain, McGregor has lifted numerous trophies and become one of the defining figures of an era that has delivered multiple league titles, domestic cups and memorable European campaigns. Because of that history, many supporters always believed he would spend his entire playing career at Celtic before eventually moving into another role within the club.

However, the conversation surrounding his future has gradually changed over recent months. While there has been no official indication that either McGregor or Celtic are preparing for a separation, several developments have encouraged speculation that his career path may eventually take a different direction.

Earlier this year, reports emerged suggesting Rodgers was interested in bringing his former captain to Saudi Arabia after accepting the managerial position at Al-Qadsiah. The speculation centred on Rodgers’ desire to recruit experienced players capable of adding leadership and quality to his new squad, with McGregor reportedly fitting the profile the club wanted to target.

Despite those reports, McGregor initially played down suggestions that he was preparing to leave Celtic. He reaffirmed his commitment to the club and indicated that he remained focused on continuing his successful career in Glasgow.

Even so, comments made by the midfielder later in the season added another layer to the ongoing debate. Rather than offering an unconditional commitment to remain regardless of circumstances, McGregor made it clear that his own ambitions would always need to align with those of Celtic.

Speaking openly about his future in April, the midfielder stressed that his desire was to continue representing Celtic, provided the club maintained the standards and ambitions that have defined its recent success. He explained that remaining competitive and consistently challenging for major honours would be essential factors in any decision regarding the next stage of his career.

McGregor also emphasised that he had no interest in simply remaining at the club for sentimental reasons if Celtic were no longer competing for trophies. He insisted that everyone within the club already understood his mindset and his determination to continue winning silverware at the highest possible level.

Those comments attracted significant attention because they represented one of the clearest public indications that the experienced midfielder’s future may ultimately depend on the direction the club takes over the coming seasons.

Since those remarks, reports from the Middle East have continued to suggest that Rodgers is keen to strengthen Al-Qadsiah with experienced professionals who possess leadership qualities and winning mentalities. McGregor has repeatedly been mentioned among the players believed to fit that profile, further fuelling speculation over a possible reunion between the pair.

His decision to join Unique Sports Group will inevitably be viewed through that same lens. While footballers regularly change agents for a variety of professional reasons, including contract negotiations, commercial opportunities and long-term career planning, supporters are naturally interpreting the move alongside the existing transfer rumours.

At present, there is no confirmation that McGregor intends to leave Celtic, nor has there been any official indication from the club that his future is in doubt. With two years still remaining on his current contract, Celtic remain in a strong position regarding any potential discussions involving their captain.

Even so, the combination of Rodgers’ reported interest, McGregor’s comments about ambition, continued links from Saudi Arabia and now his switch to the same representation agency has ensured that speculation surrounding his future is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

Whether the latest development proves to be nothing more than a routine business decision or the first step toward a future move remains to be seen. For now, McGregor continues to lead Celtic as captain, but his agency switch has undoubtedly added another intriguing chapter to an ongoing story that supporters will continue to monitor closely throughout the summer transfer window.
