Confirmed: Promising Nigerian left-back Davon Gbajumo signs first professional contract with Southampton

Southampton have confirmed that highly regarded Nigerian defender Davon Gbajumo has committed his future to the club after signing his first professional contract with the Saints.

The Championship club announced the development through an official statement, confirming that the talented young left-back has put pen to paper on a professional agreement that will keep him at St Mary’s until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season.

Despite those setbacks, Gbajumo managed to make three appearances for the Saints in the Under-18 Premier League during his maiden season with the academy.

“Davon had a challenging start to his time at Southampton, but has overcome those injuries and is focusing on earning game time with the Under-21s,” Goldie said.

According to Goldie, Gbajumo continued to approach his development professionally despite those setbacks and remained determined to make progress.

“He’s been very consistent with his approach despite the early setbacks, and has remained focused on his development as we hope he can make progress this season,” he added.

The comments underline the faith Southampton have placed in the Nigerian-born defender and suggest the club sees a pathway for him to continue moving through the academy structure.

Gbajumo has now recovered from the injury problems that kept him out for much of the previous season. His return to fitness gives him an important opportunity to make up for lost time and compete for regular involvement with Southampton’s Under-21 side.

His progress was already being monitored closely when he was named in the Southampton matchday squad for their Premier League 2 fixture against Everton on August 28.
