Discussions underway: Celtic has begun negotiations to acquire an 11-cap international player praised by O’Neill as “special.”
Celtic have stepped up their pursuit of left-back Marcelo Saracchi, with manager Martin O’Neill confirming that discussions have already taken place over a possible return to Parkhead. As the Scottish champions prepare for another demanding campaign, the club are actively working to strengthen the squad in a bid to defend their Scottish Premiership crown and compete strongly in Europe.
Despite successfully retaining the league title last season, O’Neill has made it clear that he has no intention of standing still in the transfer market. The Celtic boss believes fresh additions are essential if his side are to continue progressing, and he has revealed that the club are already engaged in negotiations for several potential signings.
Speaking about Celtic’s transfer activity, O’Neill explained that the recruitment team has been working on multiple targets while also dealing with interest in members of the current squad. He expressed confidence that supporters would soon begin to see new arrivals at Celtic Park, suggesting that the club hope to complete a number of deals over the coming weeks.
According to the manager, the objective is to add genuine quality to a group of players he already rates highly. O’Neill believes strengthening key areas will help Celtic maintain their dominance domestically while improving their chances of making a deeper impact in continental competitions.
Alongside pursuing new recruits, Celtic are also exploring opportunities to re-sign players who impressed during the previous campaign. Among those being considered are striker Kelechi Iheanacho and left-back Marcelo Saracchi, both of whom played important roles as the Hoops secured another Scottish Premiership title.
Saracchi, in particular, appears to have left a lasting impression on O’Neill. Following Celtic’s 3-1 victory over Hearts on the final day of last season, the manager praised the Uruguayan defender not only for his performances but also for his personality around the club. O’Neill described him as a “special character,” highlighting the positive influence he had within the squad during his spell in Glasgow.
That admiration now appears to be translating into serious transfer interest. O’Neill has publicly admitted that he wants Saracchi back at Celtic Park and confirmed that conversations have already taken place with the defender’s representatives regarding a possible return.
The manager revealed that he would happily welcome Saracchi back if a deal can be reached, even joking that the defender deserved an extraordinarily long contract after his contribution in the win over Hearts. O’Neill’s comments underline just how highly he regards the Uruguay international, both as a footballer and as an individual.
Encouragingly for Celtic, Saracchi is reportedly open to returning to Scotland. The defender is said to be keen on another spell at Celtic Park, potentially making negotiations smoother if the clubs can agree on suitable terms.
Financially, the transfer also appears to make plenty of sense. The Boca Juniors full-back is believed to carry a valuation of around £1.3 million, making him an affordable option for Celtic during a summer in which supporters have once again questioned the club’s spending strategy.
Major shareholder Dermot Desmond has faced criticism from some sections of the fanbase over what they perceive to be a lack of significant investment in recent transfer windows. As a result, supporters will be hoping Celtic can complete deals that strengthen the squad without placing excessive strain on the club’s finances.
Saracchi fits that profile perfectly. His relatively modest valuation means Celtic could secure an experienced international defender without committing a huge transfer fee, allowing resources to be allocated elsewhere across the squad.
While Kieran Tierney is widely recognised for his attacking quality and ability to influence games going forward, Saracchi offers a different skill set that could provide valuable balance within O’Neill’s squad.
Last season, the 11-cap Uruguay international consistently demonstrated his defensive reliability. His reading of the game, positioning and willingness to recover possession made him one of Celtic’s most dependable defenders whenever he featured.
Statistics from the Scottish Premiership highlight exactly why the coaching staff value his attributes so highly. Saracchi averaged 6.4 ball recoveries every 90 minutes during the league campaign, ranking second among Celtic players in that category.
His ability to anticipate danger was equally impressive. The former Levante defender also finished joint-first within the squad for interceptions per 90 minutes, illustrating his intelligence and awareness when defending.
Those qualities could make him an ideal option for O’Neill next season, particularly in matches where Celtic need additional defensive security. While Tierney’s attacking instincts remain a major asset, Saracchi’s strengths allow him to provide a more conservative alternative when protecting leads or facing difficult opponents.
Having two players with contrasting styles would also give O’Neill greater tactical flexibility throughout a long and demanding campaign. Squad depth will be vital as Celtic balance domestic competitions alongside European commitments, making experienced options like Saracchi especially valuable.
The defender already understands the expectations that come with representing Celtic, meaning he would require little time to settle back into the environment. His previous experience at the club, combined with his familiarity with Scottish football, could allow him to make an immediate impact if the transfer is completed.
For now, discussions remain ongoing, but O’Neill’s comments have provided the clearest indication yet that bringing Saracchi back to Glasgow is a genuine priority for Celtic this summer. With negotiations already underway and the player reportedly eager to return, there is growing optimism that an agreement can eventually be reached.
If the Hoops are successful in completing the move, they would secure an experienced international defender with proven knowledge of the club, impressive defensive credentials and the versatility to strengthen an already talented squad. As Celtic continue shaping their plans for the new season, Saracchi’s return could prove to be one of the club’s smartest pieces of business during the transfer window.
