Doug Nussmeier has been named the new offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, continuing his long-standing partnership with Kellen Moore. The move comes just weeks after Moore was appointed as the Saints’ head coach following his tenure as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator.

A Longstanding Coaching Partnership

Nussmeier and Moore have worked together for the past seven seasons, dating back to their time with the Dallas Cowboys. Most recently, Nussmeier served as the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles, helping lead the team to a dominant 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Now, he steps into a key leadership role for the Saints as they look to revamp their offense following a disappointing 5-12 season.

Nussmeier’s Coaching Journey

Nussmeier, a former quarterback at Idaho, was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in New Orleans, making two starts. His coaching career began in 2001, and he has since held numerous offensive coordinator positions, including stints at Alabama (2012-2013), Michigan, and Florida. His NFL coaching experience includes roles with the Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, and Eagles.

At Alabama, Nussmeier helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship in the 2012 season, defeating Notre Dame 42-14. His ability to develop quarterbacks and implement dynamic offensive schemes has been a hallmark of his coaching career.

New Coaching Staff in New Orleans

Under Moore’s leadership, the Saints are assembling a fresh coaching staff. Alongside Nussmeier, the team has named Brandon Staley as defensive coordinator and Phil Galiano as special teams coordinator. The Saints have also brought in Bo Davis as defensive line coach and Grady Brown as cornerbacks coach.

Rebuilding the Saints’ Offense

The Saints struggled offensively in 2024, ranking 24th in points and 21st in yards. With Nussmeier at the helm of the offense, the team hopes to revitalize its attack and return to playoff contention. His experience working with quarterbacks could be crucial in developing the team’s next signal-caller or maximizing the potential of the current roster.

As the Saints prepare for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Nussmeier and Moore to see if they can bring their winning formula from Philadelphia to New Orleans.
