Dragan Solak makes a Spygate-related remark while unveiling Southampton’s new strategy.
Solak Highlights AI as a Cornerstone of Southampton’s Future
Southampton owner Dragan Solak has shared fresh insight into the club’s long-term plans, revealing that artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role in shaping the team’s future. While discussing the club’s direction, he also made a light-hearted reference to the recent “Spygate” controversy, but quickly shifted the focus to how technology can give Southampton a competitive advantage.
Solak spoke highly of head coach Tonda Eckert, describing him as the perfect manager to maximise the benefits of the club’s growing investment in advanced analytics. He praised Eckert’s meticulous nature, explaining that the coach pays close attention to every detail of the game, making him well suited to work with the vast amount of information generated by Southampton’s AI systems.
According to Solak, the club’s sports science and medical departments now rely on an advanced artificial intelligence platform that processes more than 215 million data points. Because of the enormous amount of information available, producing a complete report on an individual player can sometimes take around four minutes. Rather than viewing this as a drawback, Solak believes it demonstrates the depth and quality of the analysis available to the coaching staff. He sees continued investment in this technology as an important part of Southampton’s long-term growth.
AI’s Role in Improving Squad Fitness
One of the clearest benefits of Southampton’s data-driven approach was reflected in the team’s impressive injury record during the previous campaign. The club managed to keep the majority of its squad healthy for most of the season, allowing Eckert to work with a largely consistent group of players.
Apart from defender Mads Roerslev, who remained unavailable after suffering an Achilles injury in November, Southampton avoided the widespread injury problems that often affect clubs during demanding campaigns. Having so many players available gave the coaching staff greater flexibility when selecting teams and rotating the squad throughout the season.
Forward Ross Stewart also enjoyed his most productive period since arriving at St Mary’s Stadium. Injury setbacks had previously limited his involvement, but last season he featured in 33 matches, accounting for most of his 50 appearances for Southampton across three years. His increased availability suggested that the club’s investment in sports science, recovery programmes and injury prevention was beginning to produce tangible results.
Using Technology to Compete With Bigger Clubs
Solak believes Southampton’s AI system extends beyond medical monitoring and player conditioning. He explained that the technology is also capable of delivering detailed tactical reports on opponents, helping the coaching staff prepare more effectively for upcoming matches.
He acknowledged that Southampton cannot compete financially with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, particularly Manchester United. Instead of matching those teams through spending power, Solak believes the club must find smarter ways to gain an advantage. Using advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making is central to that strategy.
The Southampton owner insisted that limited finances should never reduce the club’s ambitions. Although wealthier teams possess greater resources, he believes Southampton should aim to achieve the same standards by being more efficient, innovative and intelligent in every aspect of football operations.
Ambition Must Drive Every Department
Solak made it clear that success on the pitch remains the club’s primary objective. While acknowledging the efforts of employees across every department, he stressed that everything ultimately revolves around improving the first team.
He explained that departments such as marketing, technology and administration only achieve their full potential when the football team performs well. Winning matches creates excitement among supporters, strengthens the club’s reputation and provides every department with greater opportunities to succeed. Conversely, poor results make it far more difficult for achievements elsewhere within the organisation to receive recognition.
For Solak, strong football performances provide the foundation upon which every other part of the club can build. He believes success on the field naturally enhances the work carried out behind the scenes.
Southampton Displayed Their Potential Last Season
Evidence of Southampton’s ambition could be seen during their impressive FA Cup campaign. Eckert’s side reached the semi-finals after producing several memorable performances against elite opposition.
Victories over Fulham and Arsenal demonstrated that Southampton were capable of competing with some of England’s strongest clubs. They also impressed against Manchester City by taking the lead before eventually falling short.
Those results were particularly significant because Arsenal and Manchester City finished as the Premier League’s top two sides during the 2025/26 season and possess vastly superior financial resources. Despite that gap in spending power, Southampton matched both teams for long periods and even outperformed Arsenal over the course of 90 minutes.
These performances reinforced Solak’s belief that intelligent planning, detailed preparation and tactical organisation can help narrow the financial gap between Southampton and the division’s biggest clubs.
Fitness Played a Major Part in Southampton’s Success
The club’s ability to maintain player fitness became even more important during the closing months of the season. Southampton faced an intense fixture schedule as their FA Cup run forced them to play twice every week, with Saturday and Tuesday matches becoming the norm following the final international break.
Despite the demanding calendar, Eckert was still able to rely on a largely healthy squad. The players maintained high performance levels throughout the run-in, suggesting that Southampton’s investment in sports science, conditioning and AI-assisted workload management played a valuable role in keeping the squad physically prepared.
Having consistent player availability allowed Southampton to remain competitive across multiple competitions without suffering the dramatic decline in fitness that many clubs experience during congested schedules.
AI Could Shape Southampton’s Future
Looking ahead, Solak believes artificial intelligence can become one of Southampton’s biggest competitive advantages. By combining medical analysis, performance monitoring and tactical scouting, the club hopes to maximise every available resource despite operating with a smaller budget than many of its rivals.
Whether those technological investments ultimately prove decisive remains to be seen, but Southampton’s impressive performances last season provide reasons for optimism. The team finished the league campaign on a remarkable 19-match unbeaten run while also enjoying an excellent FA Cup journey. Although some critics have jokingly linked that success to the “Spygate” saga, Solak clearly believes the club’s progress has been driven by careful planning, modern technology and intelligent decision-making. The coming Championship season will offer the strongest indication yet of whether Southampton’s AI-led strategy can translate into sustained success and help the club achieve its ambitions.
