Eckert optimistic Southampton forward will be available against Preston.
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has expressed optimism that winger Leo Scienza will be fit enough to return to action when the Saints travel to face Preston North End on Saturday.
The Brazilian attacker missed Southampton’s midweek Championship meeting with West Bromwich Albion after suffering an injury that ruled him out shortly before the match. Although his absence was a setback for Eckert, the manager does not believe the problem will necessarily keep him away from the team for an extended period.
Scienza has been an important attacking option for Southampton, and his potential availability for the weekend fixture would provide a welcome boost as the club prepare for another demanding Championship encounter.
Speaking after the draw against West Brom, Eckert explained that Scienza’s absence was a late decision because the winger had been experiencing considerable discomfort.
The Southampton boss made it clear that the medical situation needed to be handled carefully rather than risking the player’s fitness by including him in the team.
However, his latest comments suggest there is genuine encouragement surrounding the possibility of Scienza returning against Preston.
Eckert provides positive update on Scienza
Scienza’s absence from the West Brom match was not something Southampton had necessarily planned for earlier in the week.
The winger was ruled out late after experiencing pain, leaving the coaching staff with little choice but to leave him out of the squad for the Championship fixture.
Eckert explained that the decision was made because the player’s condition meant he was not ready to participate.
“Leo was a very late decision,” the Southampton manager said.
“He’s been in quite a lot of pain, so it didn’t make sense today, but I am very hopeful for him to feature for Saturday.”
Those comments will encourage Southampton supporters who are hoping to see the Brazilian return quickly.
The manager’s optimism suggests that the injury may not be serious enough to rule Scienza out for a prolonged period, although his availability will ultimately depend on how he responds before the weekend.
Southampton will be keen to avoid taking unnecessary risks with one of their attacking players, particularly with a busy Championship schedule requiring the squad to remain as strong as possible.
Scienza’s ability to provide attacking quality makes him an important option for Eckert, and having him available would give the manager another choice when deciding how to approach the Preston fixture.
Nevertheless, the club will need to ensure that the winger is comfortable enough to return before considering his involvement.
Southampton have other injury concerns
While the update on Scienza was encouraging, the Brazilian was not the only Southampton player missing from the midweek meeting with West Brom.
Striker Cyle Larin and midfielder Caspar Jander were also unavailable for the trip to The Hawthorns.
Their absence leaves Eckert with additional fitness questions to consider before selecting his team for Saturday’s match at Deepdale.
Unlike his comments about Scienza, the manager did not provide the same level of optimism regarding the other two players.
Instead, he confirmed that Southampton would need to assess both individuals before determining whether they could return to the squad.
“For Caspar and Cyle we will need to assess,” Eckert added.
That means their participation against Preston remains uncertain, with the club needing to monitor their condition before making a final decision.
Larin’s possible return would be particularly relevant to Southampton’s attacking options, while Jander’s availability could provide another midfield choice for the manager.
However, neither player can currently be considered certain to feature based on the information provided by Eckert.
The Saints will therefore have to wait for further assessments before knowing how many of their unavailable players could return for the weekend.
Preston test presents another challenge for the Saints
Southampton’s visit to Preston represents another important opportunity for Eckert’s team to continue their Championship campaign.
The manager will be hoping to have as many players available as possible, especially after the demands of the midweek fixture against West Brom.
The draw at The Hawthorns means the Saints will now turn their attention towards Deepdale, where they will look to produce a positive performance and collect valuable points.
Having Scienza back would give the team another attacking option and potentially improve the manager’s selection choices.
The Brazilian’s absence against West Brom was a late development, so Southampton will be encouraged by the possibility that he could recover quickly enough to be involved on Saturday.
However, the situation involving Larin and Jander is less clear.
Both players will need to undergo further assessments, leaving Eckert waiting for more information before deciding whether they can travel with the squad.
For a team looking to maintain consistency throughout a competitive Championship season, managing injuries and ensuring players return at the right time will be important.
Southampton cannot afford to take unnecessary risks, but the manager will also understand the value of having his strongest possible group available.
Eckert waits for final fitness decisions
The coming days will be important in determining the strength of Southampton’s squad for the Preston encounter.
Scienza appears to have the most encouraging outlook after Eckert publicly expressed confidence that the winger could feature.
Nevertheless, the manager’s comments should not be interpreted as confirmation that the Brazilian has already been declared fit.
His condition will need to improve sufficiently for him to return without aggravating the problem that forced him out of the West Brom match.
Meanwhile, Larin and Jander remain subject to assessment, with their availability still undecided.
Eckert will therefore have to wait before making his final selection decisions for the trip to Deepdale.
The positive news surrounding Scienza will offer Southampton some encouragement, but the potential absences of two other players mean the manager still has important questions to resolve.
Ultimately, the Saints will hope their fitness situation improves before Saturday, allowing them to travel to Preston with a stronger squad and a greater number of options.
For now, supporters will be watching closely for further updates, particularly regarding Scienza, whose possible return could provide a timely boost for Eckert’s side.
