Ex-Celtic star’s £22m transfer takes a new turn after the manager who signed him is sacked.

Arne Engels is facing an uncertain future at West Ham United following the club’s decision to dismiss head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, just months after the Belgian midfielder completed his £22 million move from Celtic.

The former Hoops star has been a regular feature in West Ham’s starting lineup since arriving at the London Stadium, having started every Championship fixture since completing his transfer.

Nuno Espírito Santo

Nuno was particularly keen to bring Engels to the club and played an important role in securing his services during the summer transfer window.

However, the Portuguese manager has now been relieved of his responsibilities after West Ham decided that a change in leadership was necessary following a disappointing run of results.

The development could have significant implications for Engels, who only recently made the switch from Scottish football to join the London club.

West Ham have struggled to maintain consistency in the Championship, with consecutive home defeats increasing the pressure on Nuno and his coaching staff.

Their latest setback came on Saturday when the Hammers suffered a 3-1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion, leaving them eighth in the second-tier standings.

Following the disappointing result, the club’s hierarchy conducted what they described as a thorough review of the team’s performances and overall progress since the beginning of the campaign.

The review ultimately resulted in the decision to remove Nuno from his position, despite the club having previously shown confidence in the Portuguese coach.

West Ham dismiss Nuno after disappointing Championship results

West Ham initially decided to retain Nuno in May despite his inability to prevent the club from being relegated from the Premier League.

The decision suggested that the board believed he was capable of leading the Hammers through the challenges of Championship football and guiding them towards an immediate return to the top flight.

However, the team’s performances have apparently failed to meet the expectations of the club’s leadership.

Back-to-back defeats at the London Stadium proved particularly damaging, with the 3-1 loss against West Brom becoming the final result before the managerial announcement.

West Ham confirmed that Nuno had left his position with immediate effect, while assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa also departed.

In an official statement, the club explained that the decision followed an extensive assessment of the team’s start to the Championship season.

West Ham said: “West Ham United can confirm that men’s first-team head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect.”

The statement continued by explaining the reasoning behind the decision.

“Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the board of directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club’s objectives and expectations remain on track.”

The club also acknowledged the contribution made by the departing members of the coaching staff and wished them well in their future careers.

West Ham added: “West Ham United would like to thank Nuno, Rui and Rui for their hard work and commitment during their time at the club, and wish them all the very best for the future.”

The statement concluded by confirming that the recruitment process for a replacement had already begun.

“The process of recruiting a new head coach is already underway.”

Arne Engels faces uncertainty after Nuno’s departure

The managerial change presents an interesting situation for Engels, considering how recently he arrived at the London Stadium and the importance Nuno placed on signing him.

The Belgian midfielder joined West Ham from Celtic in August in a deal worth approximately £22 million.

His transfer came after the Scottish champions rejected two earlier offers from the English club before eventually agreeing to allow the midfielder to leave.

Engels had become an important member of Celtic’s midfield, with his physical qualities, energy and ability to contribute in different areas making him an attractive option for West Ham.

Since completing the move, the former Celtic player has established himself as a regular starter, featuring from the beginning in every Championship match.

Nuno’s departure could therefore represent a significant change for the midfielder, particularly because the Portuguese manager was one of the strongest supporters of bringing him to England.

A new head coach will now arrive with his own ideas about the squad, preferred formation and tactical approach.

Although Engels has enjoyed regular opportunities under Nuno, there is no guarantee that the next manager will view him in exactly the same way.

The Belgian will therefore be hoping to maintain his performances and demonstrate that he deserves to remain an important part of West Ham’s plans regardless of who takes charge.

Celtic were reluctant to lose £22m Arne Engels

Engels’ departure from Celtic was a significant moment during the summer transfer window, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the negotiations.

West Ham eventually secured his signature after having two previous bids rejected by the Scottish club.

Martin O’Neill, who was managing Celtic at the time, admitted that the midfielder wanted to complete the move and was unwilling to risk suffering an injury by participating in the Hoops’ Champions League play-off.

O’Neill also expressed his disappointment about losing the Belgian, acknowledging that his physical presence and impressive running ability would be difficult for Celtic to replace.

The former Celtic manager’s comments demonstrated how highly the midfielder was regarded within the Scottish champions’ setup.

However, Engels ultimately got his desired move to England, joining West Ham in a £22 million transfer.

Only a few months later, the circumstances surrounding his new club have changed dramatically.

West Ham announce interim management arrangements

With Nuno and his assistants no longer involved, West Ham have appointed an interim group to oversee preparations for their next Championship fixture.

Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will temporarily take responsibility for the first-team preparations ahead of Wednesday night’s away encounter against Cardiff City.

The arrangement will give the club some time to identify a permanent replacement while attempting to prevent further disruption to the team’s campaign.

For Engels, the immediate priority will be to impress whoever takes temporary or permanent charge and continue establishing himself at West Ham.

The £22 million signing arrived with considerable expectations after his performances at Celtic, but the managerial departure has introduced an unexpected complication into his first season in English football.

Whether the next head coach will continue to build his midfield around the Belgian remains to be seen.
