A devoted Heart of Midlothian F.C. supporter has jokingly demanded compensation from the club after his recently completed Lawrence Shankland tattoo instantly became outdated following the striker’s move to fierce rivals Rangers F.C..

Supporter Jack Robertson, a passionate Hearts fan, had the tattoo inked onto his calf only weeks before the Scotland international completed his controversial switch from Tynecastle to Ibrox.

At the time the tattoo was created, Shankland remained the poster boy of Hearts’ ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful Scottish Premiership title challenge.

However, within a matter of weeks, the striker’s departure to Rangers dramatically changed the mood surrounding the artwork.

Now, Robertson has humorously suggested Hearts should pay for the tattoo to be removed or covered up after Shankland swapped maroon for blue.

Tattoo Celebrated Shankland’s Status at Hearts

The tattoo itself was designed as a tribute to Shankland’s importance at Hearts during his four-year spell with the Edinburgh side.

The striking artwork portrays the forward as the “Nine of Hearts” on a playing card, a reference to both the famous card suit and the number nine shirt he wore for the club.

At the time Robertson commissioned the design, Shankland was still viewed by many supporters as one of the biggest modern heroes at Tynecastle.

The striker had led the line throughout Hearts’ title challenge and remained hugely popular among fans thanks to his goalscoring exploits against major rivals and his leadership role within the squad.

Robertson proudly showed off the tattoo online shortly after getting it done.

Unfortunately for him, events quickly took an unexpected turn.

Shankland’s Rangers Move Changes Everything

Following Hearts’ dramatic collapse in the title race, Shankland completed a move to Rangers, a transfer that immediately divided opinion among supporters.

The switch to one of Hearts’ biggest rivals transformed what had been a proud tribute tattoo into a source of frustration and embarrassment for Robertson.

The fan responded to the transfer with humour while posting a photograph of the tattoo on social media.

“Less than a month old,” he wrote.

He then jokingly added: “Fully expect the club to pay for a cover up. Cheers.”

His comments quickly attracted attention online as football supporters reacted to the unfortunate timing of the tattoo.

Rival Fans Mock the Situation

As expected, rival supporters wasted little time poking fun at Robertson’s predicament following Shankland’s transfer.

One Rangers supporter even used artificial intelligence to digitally alter the tattoo design.

The edited image showed Shankland wearing a Rangers shirt instead of Hearts colours while also changing the striker’s number from nine to seven, his new squad number at Ibrox.

The rival fan captioned the image: “Fixed that for you pal.”

Despite the teasing, many football fans still admired the quality and creativity of the tattoo itself.

One Rangers supporter admitted: “In all seriousness, that is a superb tattoo design as well.”

Robertson continued responding with humour despite the situation.

“I’ll cut it off and it’s yours for the right price mate,” he joked.

He then added another sarcastic dig aimed at Hearts officials.

“I’ll let the club negotiate so you’ll probably get it free of charge.”

Hearts Fan Accepts Harsh Reality

Robertson also acknowledged the uncomfortable reality that the tattoo no longer carried the same meaning following Shankland’s departure.

“No the nine of Hearts anymore is it ya melon,” he joked during one exchange online.

Although the situation clearly frustrated the supporter, his willingness to laugh at the unfortunate timing helped the story gain widespread attention among Scottish football fans.

Many supporters sympathised with Robertson while also recognising the humour behind the situation.

Others pointed out just how brutal the timing had been.

One social media user wrote: “Oof mate, that’s proper brutal timing.”

“Less than a month old and he’s already off to Rangers,” the supporter added.

Another fan joked that things could have been even worse for Robertson.

“At least you didn’t jump the gun and get ‘SPL Champions 2026’ inked,” they commented.

That remark referenced Hearts’ dramatic failure to secure the Scottish Premiership title despite spending much of the season leading the table.

Some Fans Criticise the Tattoo Design

While many supporters praised the creativity of the tattoo, not everyone was impressed by the artwork itself.

Several online users suggested the image did not resemble Shankland particularly closely.

One critic joked: “Change the football kit to a Liverpool kit.”

“The player looks more like Michael Owen than Lawrence Shankland,” they added.

Another user commented: “Luckily it looks nothing like him.”

Despite the mixed reactions, most supporters agreed the tattoo had clearly required significant effort and artistic quality.

Unfortunately for Robertson, however, the football circumstances surrounding it changed almost immediately after it was completed.

Another Famous Hearts Tattoo Disaster Remembered

The situation also reminded some Hearts supporters of another infamous tattoo story connected to the club.

Back in 2005, fan Stan Thomson famously had the surname of controversial former Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov tattooed in huge lettering across his back.

At the time, Romanov was celebrated by some supporters after taking control of the club and promising major investment and success.

However, his reign eventually ended in chaos and financial disaster.

Under Romanov’s ownership, Hearts were plunged into administration and came dangerously close to collapse.

That infamous tattoo has since become one of the most well-known examples of football fans regretting permanent tributes linked to their clubs.

Robertson’s Shankland tattoo now risks joining that list of unfortunate football-related inkings.

Shankland’s Legacy at Hearts

Despite the controversial nature of his Rangers move, there is little doubt Shankland enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Hearts.

During four years at Tynecastle, the striker scored an impressive 88 goals for the club across all competitions.

He established himself as one of the most prolific Scottish forwards in the Premiership and regularly delivered in major matches.

Among his goals were seven scored directly against Rangers, making his eventual move to Ibrox even more difficult for some Hearts supporters to accept.

Last season alone, the striker scored 20 goals while captaining the side during their title challenge.

For long stretches of the campaign, Hearts looked capable of ending Celtic’s dominance and securing a remarkable league triumph.

Hearts’ Painful Title Collapse

The tattoo situation became even more awkward because it coincided with Hearts’ heartbreaking end to the season.

The Edinburgh club had led the Scottish Premiership table since September and entered the final day with genuine hopes of lifting the title.

However, everything unravelled during the decisive match at Celtic Park.

Hearts suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat against Celtic F.C., allowing the Glasgow side to secure another league championship.

The result crushed Hearts supporters who had dreamed of witnessing a historic title success.

Soon afterwards, Shankland’s move to Rangers added further frustration and disappointment.

For many fans, the combination of losing the title and then losing their captain to a major rival proved difficult to accept.

Shankland Joins Rangers on Free Transfer

Reports suggest Rangers secured Shankland’s signature without paying a transfer fee.

That aspect of the deal only intensified debate among supporters regarding how Hearts handled the striker’s contract situation.

From Rangers’ perspective, however, signing an experienced Scottish striker with proven Premiership goalscoring ability represented a major opportunity.

For Hearts supporters like Robertson, though, the move instantly transformed cherished memories into uncomfortable reminders.

What had originally been intended as a permanent tribute to one of the club’s modern icons suddenly became associated with a painful transfer saga.

Tattoo Story Captures Football’s Emotional Side

Although Robertson’s demand for compensation was clearly tongue-in-cheek, the story highlighted the emotional connection football supporters develop with players and clubs.

Fans often celebrate heroes through shirts, banners, chants, and even tattoos, believing certain players will remain symbols of their club forever.

However, football moves quickly, and transfers can rapidly alter perceptions.

In Robertson’s case, a tattoo completed in celebration became awkward almost overnight.

Even so, the Hearts supporter’s ability to laugh at the situation has earned admiration from many football fans online.

While the artwork may now carry mixed emotions, it has certainly become one of the most talked-about football tattoos in Scottish football this summer.
