Is Taylor Harwood-Bellis set to depart from Southampton? New transfer details surface.

A fresh update has emerged regarding Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ future at Southampton, with the club captain attracting interest from Portuguese giants Benfica.

The 24-year-old defender has become the subject of speculation during the summer transfer window, but the latest information suggests Southampton supporters do not need to panic just yet.

According to Dan Hargraves of the Daily Echo, Benfica are certainly interested in Harwood-Bellis, although the Lisbon club are yet to make a formal offer for the England international.

That distinction will be welcome news for Southampton, who are preparing to begin their first full Championship campaign under Tonda Eckert in unusual circumstances.

The Saints will start the season with a four-point deduction following the fallout from the Spygate scandal that overshadowed the end of the previous campaign. Eckert could also face a touchline ban, with the Football Association continuing its own investigation.

Harwood-Bellis currently has just under two years remaining on his Southampton contract. His initial loan from Manchester City was made permanent following the club’s promotion in 2024, with the Saints reportedly paying £20 million for his services.

Interest in the defender was already evident during the January transfer window, although there had been no expectation at that stage that Southampton would sell him.

Following the Spygate controversy, however, reports suggested that the club would demand a substantial transfer fee if Harwood-Bellis was to leave during the summer.

Unsurprisingly, the latest transfer speculation has prompted a strong reaction from Southampton supporters.

Another fan delivered an equally straightforward verdict, calling for Southampton to reject any potential proposal because the defender is considered the team’s main man.

Another supporter argued that Southampton should demand more than the amount received for Shea Charles if Harwood-Bellis is to be sold, describing him as an absolutely vital player.

There was also some humour from a fan who referred to Harwood-Bellis’ slow start last season, joking that another difficult beginning to the campaign might reduce the level of transfer interest.

Southampton would struggle to replace him
