Kasper Høgh reveals how faith helps him cope with pressure at Celtic

Kasper Hogh has spoken openly about the role his faith plays in helping him handle difficult moments, with the Celtic striker explaining how his beliefs and personal development have prepared him for life at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.

The Danish international joined Celtic during the summer transfer window for a deal worth more than £11 million, becoming the club’s record signing. The move created considerable expectations, particularly after Hogh scored five goals in last season’s Champions League group stage while playing for Bodo/Glimt.

His Celtic career began quietly, but he soon showed supporters exactly what he could offer. Hogh produced a spectacular performance against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, scoring three times before half-time in a 5-1 Celtic victory.

Since then, however, the 25-year-old has experienced a quieter period in front of goal. His reduced output has arrived during a difficult spell for Celtic, who have suffered three consecutive defeats, including two losses against Rangers.

As criticism has increased around the team, Hogh has also found himself under greater scrutiny. Nevertheless, the striker believes his development away from football has helped him cope with the demands of playing for a club where expectations are extremely high.

In an interview with Danish magazine Euroman, which focused on his religious beliefs, Hogh described his move to Glasgow as an important experience for him both professionally and personally.

“It’s been a huge experience. Celtic is a huge club. Everything is just bigger. There are more fans and there are more people watching you,” he said.

Moving to another country is never straightforward, and Hogh admitted that his earlier move from Denmark to Norway brought significant difficulties. At that stage of his career, he struggled with anxiety that he says was deeply rooted within him.

“Of course, it’s always difficult to move to a new country, but I think this is really good for my development as a person,” Hogh explained.

“When I had to make the leap from Denmark to Norway, I had problems because of the anxiety that was deep inside me.”

The forward believes his circumstances are now very different. He has developed a stronger sense of peace through his faith and has the support of people close to him as he settles into his new life in Scotland.

“But now I’m in a completely different situation. I’ve found peace in God, I have a wonderful girlfriend who has moved in with me, and I still have great support from my family and friends,” he said.

That personal stability has allowed Hogh to embrace the challenge of playing for Celtic. The size of the club brings enormous attention, with players expected to perform in front of large crowds while dealing with constant scrutiny from supporters and the media.

Rather than avoiding that pressure, Hogh explained that he wanted the move because he was ready to challenge himself and step outside the environment he already knew.

“I was also ready to experience something new. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. And that’s why this change is perfect for me right now,” Hogh added.

His comments provide an insight into the mindset of a player still adapting to a major change in his career. Although goals and performances remain the ultimate measure of his success, Hogh sees his time at Celtic as part of a wider process of becoming a more mature person.

That perspective could prove valuable as he attempts to respond to his recent dip in form. His hat-trick at Kilmarnock demonstrated his finishing ability, while his European record before joining Celtic showed that he has experience of performing on major occasions.

Celtic will now hope the international break gives Hogh and the rest of the squad an opportunity to regroup. The team returns to action needing a response after three successive defeats, and the Danish striker will be among those expected to help provide it.

For Hogh, rediscovering his goalscoring touch will be particularly important. He arrived in Glasgow with a significant price tag and the status of a record signing, meaning expectations will naturally remain high.

There is also considerable attacking talent around him. Camilo Duran offers another threat in the forward line, and Celtic’s attack has the potential to cause problems for opponents when the players find their rhythm.

However, potential must now become consistent production. Celtic supporters will want to see the quality that was evident during the victory over Kilmarnock translated into regular goals and improved results.

Hogh’s faith appears to give him a strong foundation as he faces that challenge. His comments suggest that he feels more settled and prepared than he did during earlier stages of his career, while his family, girlfriend and friends continue to provide important support. The next test will be on the pitch. Hogh has already shown Celtic supporters what he can do.
