Lakers are being urged to finally part ways with the $101 million, four-time NBA champion and 22-time All-Star.
The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into what promises to be a pivotal offseason.
Supporters can anticipate the 17-time NBA champions being aggressive throughout the summer — whether that involves allowing certain players to leave in free agency, adding adaptable role players, or pulling off blockbuster trades.
According to an anonymous executive from an Eastern Conference front office, one of the franchise’s main objectives should be separating from a four-time NBA champion and 22-time All-Star.
“The first thing they have to do is move off LeBron,” the executive told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on Tuesday. “Let him walk and use the cap space to rebuild around Luka. Keeping Reaves is essential. Luka (Doncic) thrives when paired with another ball handler and creator, similar to how he played alongside Kyrie (Irving) and (Jalen) Brunson.”
McMenamin added that the Lakers would welcome James back if he opts to re-sign in free agency. Still, a departure could ultimately benefit both sides. James delivered a championship to Los Angeles in 2020 and played a major role in restoring excitement and star power to the franchise.
Yet, if Doncic is to fully assume control as the centerpiece of the organization, the Lakers may have little choice but to part ways with the future Hall of Fame forward.
With speculation linking James to a potential offseason return to his original NBA team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, a fresh chapter elsewhere could be a logical next step for the former No. 1 overall pick.
