Leeds United set one condition before letting Lukas Nmecha join Southampton.
Leeds United have reportedly set a condition before considering a January departure for Lukas Nmecha, with Southampton among the clubs monitoring the forward.
The Whites are understood to be unwilling to sanction a sale unless they can first bring in another striker to replace him. That stance could complicate Southampton’s attempts to strengthen their attack during the transfer window.
Nmecha’s contract at Elland Road expires next summer, meaning Leeds face the possibility of losing him for nothing if he remains at the club until the end of the campaign. That situation has increased speculation that the 27-year-old could be moved on in January.
Nmecha has struggled for regular opportunities
The German forward joined Leeds from Wolfsburg during the summer of 2025, but he has found it difficult to establish himself as a starter under Daniel Farke.
During his Premier League season with the Yorkshire club, Nmecha made 31 league appearances but started only 10 of those matches. He managed to contribute six goals and one assist as Leeds finished 14th in their first campaign back in the top flight.
His opportunities have been even more limited this season. As of 22 October, Nmecha has featured six times in the Premier League, but all six appearances have come from the substitutes’ bench. He has yet to score, although he has registered one assist.
His lack of first-team football has reportedly increased his desire for a move, with the striker keen to find a club where he can play more consistently.
Nmecha currently sits behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Farke’s attacking pecking order, making a January departure increasingly possible if Leeds can find suitable cover.
Southampton among clubs interested
Southampton are believed to be one of the clubs interested in bringing Nmecha to the south coast.
The Saints are looking to strengthen their attacking options as they continue their push for promotion to the Premier League, and manager Tonda Eckert could see Nmecha as an attractive addition.
The forward has already demonstrated that he can score at Premier League level, while his contract situation could potentially make him an affordable target.
Nmecha will be able to negotiate pre-contract terms with clubs outside England from January, with German side Koln reportedly interested in securing his services.
However, Leeds could choose to sell him outright rather than allow his contract to run down. The club are reportedly keeping an eye on Rennes striker Esteban Lepaul as a possible attacking replacement.
Wrexham have previously been linked with Nmecha, underlining the level of interest in a player who is looking for more playing time.
Leeds hold the key to a January move
The biggest obstacle for Southampton is that Nmecha’s availability is ultimately dependent on Leeds finding another striker.
Reports suggest the Whites are prepared to consider a January sale, but only if they can bring in a suitable replacement first. From Leeds’ perspective, allowing Nmecha to leave without strengthening their own squad would leave Farke short of options in attack.
That condition means Southampton cannot simply negotiate a deal and expect the transfer to happen. The Saints may need to monitor Leeds’ recruitment plans closely while preparing alternative targets in case the Yorkshire club fails to secure the striker they want.
For Southampton, Nmecha could make sense. He would provide additional competition for Cyle Larin and give Eckert another experienced option in an attacking department that could benefit from greater depth.
There are concerns over Larin’s fitness, making another forward particularly useful as the season progresses.
Southampton remain in promotion race
Southampton have made a strong start despite beginning the Championship campaign with a four-point deduction imposed by the EFL.
The Hampshire side currently sit eighth in the table and have won six of their first 11 matches. They remain within reach of the promotion places, sitting six points behind league leaders Swansea City.
Larin has been leading the line for the Saints, but adding another proven goalscorer could strengthen their promotion challenge considerably.
Their next assignment is a difficult away fixture against second-placed West Ham at the London Stadium on 24 October, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
A January window could prove important if Southampton are to maintain their challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League.
Southampton may need another plan
Nmecha appears to be a logical target for Southampton because of his top-flight experience, age and potential availability at a reasonable price.
However, the Saints have little control over the key issue. Leeds’ decision to find a replacement before sanctioning a sale means Southampton must prepare for the possibility that the German will remain at Elland Road.
For now, Nmecha’s future remains uncertain, but his desire for regular football, Leeds’ contract dilemma and Southampton’s need for attacking reinforcements could create an interesting January transfer situation.
