Lindsey Vonn reflects on comebacks, resilience, and silencing critics: “I’m often misunderstood”
“I’ve come to accept that I won’t be able to make everyone happy—and that’s okay.”
Lindsey Vonn has reached a point in her life where outside noise no longer dictates her decisions. Instead, she has learned to rely on her own instincts, her experience, and her sense of purpose.
After stepping away from professional skiing for six years, the legendary alpine racer made a bold return, targeting the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. It was a comeback that captured global attention—not just because of her decorated career, but because of the sheer difficulty of returning to elite competition after such a long absence.
However, the road back was anything but smooth. Just one week before her Olympic race, Vonn suffered a devastating setback—tearing her ACL during a training session. Despite the severity of the injury, she made the decision to compete anyway. When race day came, it ended abruptly, with Vonn crashing only 13 seconds into her run, in full view of the world.
It was another chapter in a career defined as much by resilience as by success. Now, Vonn is choosing to tell her story in her own voice, reflecting on the lessons she has learned through years of triumphs and setbacks.
“I don’t make decisions on a whim,” she explained in an interview with Flow Space. “Grit and perseverance are important, but they have to go hand in hand with hard work and smart thinking. I know I won’t be able to satisfy everyone, and I’ve come to terms with that.”
She added simply: “Perseverance is at the core of who I am.”
Redefining resilience through adversity
When asked how her understanding of resilience has evolved from her early Olympic days to now, Vonn offered a thoughtful perspective shaped by years of experience.
She explained that resilience is not a one-dimensional concept. Instead, it can take many different forms depending on the circumstances. Throughout her life, she has faced numerous challenges, both on and off the slopes. Yet her ability to push through those moments has been driven largely by her deep passion for ski racing.
Her love for the sport has been a constant force, motivating her to train relentlessly, pursue her ambitions, and continually strive to improve. For Vonn, perseverance isn’t just a mindset—it’s part of her identity.
She credits her family as a major influence in shaping that outlook. The examples they set instilled in her the determination and mental toughness that have carried her through even the most difficult times.
Misconceptions about grit and determination
Vonn believes that many people misunderstand what it truly means to have grit.
She emphasized that perseverance does not mean blindly pushing forward without considering the risks or consequences. Instead, it requires a balance of determination, preparation, and thoughtful decision-making.
“I’m not just throwing myself down a mountain at 85 miles per hour without thinking,” she said. “Everything I do is calculated. I prepare extensively.”
Even in the lead-up to the Olympics—despite having no ACL—Vonn committed to an intense routine, spending up to 12 hours a day on rehabilitation to ensure her body was as ready as possible.
For her, grit is not about reckless persistence. It’s about combining effort with intelligence, understanding your limits, and making informed choices. True resilience, she believes, lies in that balance.
Building trust in her own instincts
Developing the ability to trust herself didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of years of experience as a professional athlete.
Vonn turned professional at just 16 years old, and from that point on, her body became central to her career. Over the years, she has dealt with a wide range of physical challenges—from minor issues like muscle soreness and back strain to more serious injuries such as fractures and major crashes.
These experiences forced her to become highly attuned to her body. Understanding how it responds, how it recovers, and what it needs has been essential to maintaining peak performance.
She also acknowledged the importance of having the right support system. Skilled doctors, therapists, and trainers have played a crucial role in helping her recover and return to competition time and again.
“My body is my job,” she said. “Taking care of it has always been my responsibility.”
Partnering with Invivyd to promote health awareness
Beyond her athletic career, Vonn is now using her platform to advocate for health and wellness.
She recently announced a collaboration with Invivyd, a company focused on antibody-based medical solutions. Through this partnership, she is helping promote the “Antibodies for Any Body” campaign, which aims to educate people about the role antibodies play in supporting the immune system.
The initiative encourages individuals to learn more about how their lifestyle choices can impact their body’s ability to fight illness. It also offers accessible tools and information to help people better understand their health.
Vonn said she was drawn to the campaign because it simplifies complex medical information, making it easier for people to engage with and apply in their daily lives.
“Even as an athlete, getting clear and reliable information isn’t always easy,” she noted. “This makes it more approachable.”
A deeply personal connection to the message
For Vonn, this campaign is more than just a professional collaboration—it’s something that resonates on a personal level.
She spoke about her mother’s battle with ALS, as well as other health challenges within her family. These experiences have shaped her perspective, reminding her not to take health for granted.
Combined with her own history of injuries, these moments have reinforced the importance of taking care of one’s body.
She also reflected on how her recent injury has affected her independence. Tasks that once seemed routine—like walking, preparing meals, or even going to the bathroom—became difficult, highlighting how easily everyday abilities can be lost.
“These are things we assume will always be there,” she said. “But they’re not guaranteed.”
That realization has strengthened her commitment to sharing knowledge and encouraging others to prioritize their well-being.
Embracing uncertainty and the next chapter
Looking ahead, Vonn is embracing the unknown.
Rather than setting rigid goals, she prefers to remain open to whatever opportunities come her way. She believes that life often takes unexpected turns—and that those moments can lead to growth and fulfillment.
“I don’t know what my life will look like in a few years,” she admitted. “And I’m okay with that.”
She sees uncertainty not as something to fear, but as something to explore. Even challenges that initially seem negative can ultimately lead to positive outcomes.
Her focus now is on finding meaning and enjoyment in whatever she chooses to pursue.
Finding joy through passion and experience
For Vonn, cultivating joy means engaging in activities that excite and inspire her.
Her foundation work has been a major source of purpose over the past decade. Beyond that, she looks forward to experiences like travel, adventure, sports, and connecting with people from different backgrounds.
Reflecting on her previous retirement, she described it as a period filled with unexpected opportunities and new directions. It showed her that life beyond competition can be just as fulfilling.
Dreaming of new adventures
Among her future plans, one destination stands out: the Maldives.
She has already made arrangements for the trip and is hopeful that her recovery will allow her to fully enjoy it—especially the chance to get back into the water.
“I’ve made the plans,” she said. “So I better be ready.”
Maintaining optimism through difficult times
While Vonn is generally optimistic, she is candid about the emotional challenges she has faced.
The past few months, in particular, have been difficult. She has experienced moments of frustration, sadness, and vulnerability. But she has also leaned on her family for support, which has helped her navigate those lows.
She credits much of her outlook to her mother, whose resilience left a lasting impression. Despite suffering a stroke that affected her coordination, her mother continued to push forward, refusing to give up—even when it meant falling repeatedly while trying to ride a bike.
“She always got back up,” Vonn recalled. “And she did it with a smile.”
Advice for overcoming setbacks
For those struggling with setbacks, Vonn offered practical and encouraging advice.
She emphasized the importance of focusing on even the smallest positives during difficult times. Whether it’s recognizing a skill, an opportunity, or a strength, those small anchors can help shift perspective.
Adversity, she believes, is a powerful teacher. While painful, it often leads to growth and resilience.
“It’s easy to spiral into negativity,” she said. “But if you stay open, those challenges can lead you somewhere better.”
Blocking out the noise and staying true to herself
As a high-profile athlete, Vonn has faced constant scrutiny. Public opinion often comes with strong—and sometimes conflicting—views about her choices.
She admitted that dealing with that noise is not always easy.
“I’m often misunderstood,” she said.
People may not fully grasp what motivates her or why she continues to push herself. While it can be tempting to explain or justify her decisions, she has learned that it’s impossible to satisfy everyone.
Instead, she focuses on what brings her happiness and fulfillment.
“I love ski racing,” she said. “That’s what drives me.”
Her goal is not to meet others’ expectations, but to live authentically and pursue what matters most to her.
“I don’t have hidden agendas,” she added. “I’m straightforward about who I am and what I care about.”
Ultimately, she hopes that by sharing her story openly, people will gain a better understanding of her journey—and the mindset that continues to guide her forward.
