Middlesbrough and West Ham could benefit most if Crystal Palace act on Swansea City.

The 2026/27 Championship promotion race is beginning to gather serious momentum, and several clubs will be keeping a close eye on developments away from their own squads. Among those who could have a particular interest in events at Swansea City are Middlesbrough and West Ham, with Crystal Palace reportedly monitoring Swansea head coach Vitor Matos.

Swansea have emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the campaign so far. Despite expectations that the Welsh club might challenge for a play-off place, Matos has taken the team to another level and transformed them into genuine contenders for automatic promotion.

However, their impressive start could also leave them vulnerable to interest from clubs higher up the football pyramid. If Crystal Palace decide to act on their reported admiration for Matos, Swansea could face a major challenge in keeping hold of the manager responsible for their remarkable progress.

Swansea City’s surprise promotion challenge

Few would have expected Swansea to be leading the Championship promotion race at this stage of the season.

The club endured several years of mid-table finishes and had struggled to establish themselves as consistent promotion contenders. That changed during the summer, when Swansea showed greater ambition in the transfer market and strengthened their squad with increased spending power.

The sale of Ethan Galbraith to Stoke City also helped provide additional resources, allowing the club to build a team capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.

Matos has subsequently made the most of those improvements.

The Portuguese coach has raised expectations at the Swansea.com Stadium during his first full campaign in charge. His work has turned Swansea from a potential play-off contender into a side that can realistically dream about returning to the Premier League.

Swansea have not played like a team simply hoping to sneak into the play-offs. Instead, their performances and results have suggested that an automatic promotion challenge could be within their reach.

Crystal Palace could put Swansea under pressure

The biggest threat to Swansea’s ambitions may now come from outside the Championship.

According to a TEAMtalk report, Matos has emerged as a possible candidate for the Crystal Palace job if Pierre Sage is dismissed.

Sage only replaced Oliver Glasner during the summer, meaning his time in charge has been relatively short. However, Palace’s inconsistent beginning to the season has reportedly increased pressure on the Frenchman.

That pressure intensified significantly following Sunday’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

A heavy loss against a local rival is rarely easy to absorb, and Palace’s hierarchy could potentially consider a change if performances and results do not improve.

Matos is reportedly among the names being considered, alongside other managers including Rob Edwards, Kieran McKenna and Scott Parker.

For Swansea supporters, the possibility will naturally cause concern.

Matos has become a valuable asset

Matos’ growing reputation is a direct consequence of the work he has done at Swansea.

Since taking charge, the former Liverpool coach has developed a team capable of competing consistently at the top end of the Championship. His influence has not gone unnoticed, with interest reportedly growing beyond England and into mainland Europe.

There is currently no clear indication that Matos is actively seeking an exit from Swansea.

He has been in charge for less than a year since succeeding Alan Sheehan, and the club’s current position gives him an excellent opportunity to achieve something significant.

However, football can change quickly.

A Premier League opportunity could be difficult for any ambitious manager to ignore, particularly if the job involves a club such as Crystal Palace. Swansea would therefore be justified in feeling nervous about the situation, even if no formal approach has been made.

Middlesbrough and West Ham could benefit

Interestingly, Swansea’s promotion rivals may have their own reasons for watching the situation closely.

Middlesbrough are among the teams with ambitions of securing promotion, and any disruption to Swansea could potentially benefit them in the race.

West Ham, meanwhile, have already demonstrated Swansea’s vulnerability by defeating them 1-0 on Saturday.

Despite that defeat, Swansea remain at the top of the Championship table, highlighting just how impressive their campaign has been.

A managerial change, or even prolonged uncertainty over Matos’ future, could potentially affect the momentum Swansea have built.

For their promotion rivals, that would obviously be welcome.

The Championship is notoriously demanding, and even small disruptions can have a significant impact over the course of a long season. If Swansea were forced to deal with speculation surrounding their manager while simultaneously attempting to maintain their position at the summit, other contenders could see an opportunity to close the gap.

Swansea face a crucial period

For now, Swansea must concentrate on maintaining their excellent league position rather than allowing external speculation to dominate their season.

Matos has created genuine belief among the Jack Army, and supporters will hope he remains committed to the project at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The club’s ambition is now clear. After years of frustration and mid-table finishes, Swansea have finally positioned themselves as serious promotion contenders.

But with success comes attention.

Crystal Palace’s reported interest is evidence that Matos’ work is attracting recognition at the highest level. Whether that interest develops into a formal approach remains to be seen.

For Swansea, the priority will be keeping their manager focused and ensuring the speculation does not derail their promotion campaign.

For Middlesbrough and the other contenders, however, the situation could be worth monitoring very closely.

If Palace eventually decide to make their interest concrete and lure Matos away from Wales, Swansea’s promotion challenge could suddenly face its biggest test yet — and their rivals may be the ones celebrating the loudest.
